X-Men In General

Go To

This thread's for all of the X-Men comics and spin-offs (X-Force, X-Factor, New Mutants etc.), whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate X-Men, X-Men 2099, X-Men "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • X-Men 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Wolverine, Deadpool, Ms. Marvel and Cable.
  • Characters and comics that originated in X-Men and its related books but are no longer connected to the franchise are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their X-Men related stories here.

Discussions that are only about X-Men adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

    Original OP
Okay, it seems to me that the thread on "X-Men: Schism" has run its course, and since everyone seems to be commenting on how the conversation is talking about general parts of the franchise, I guess I should start a thread talking about all that.

I have to say that the X Men franchise has been going on for decades. Maybe not as many as the Superman franchise has, but it still has quite a number to it.

One thing I am certain of is that the franchise seems to be subverting Status Quo Is God in recent years. Magneto and Professor Xavier seem to be fading into the background, with Cyclops and Wolverine taking their places. A lot of villains associated to the X-Men have been killed off and have actually stayed dead so far.

All this gives me the general impression that the franchise is trying to reinvent itself. Do you think that's what's going on here?

All of the young Wolverine clones — including Gabby — get together to form the WolverTeens.

...Seriously, though, I would read that shit so much. In fact, I want to write it for Marvel now.

They'd be the best at what they do, while not being very nice about it.

....that'd make a nice tag line actually. I think this could actually work.

And what they do is...not clean their room! Or do the dishes when they're told! And leave their dirty socks everywhere!

Seriously, Laura could be their teacher/caretaker and Gabby would be the "big sister" and I want to write this so much now.

X-Statix returns, although in what form I don't know.

Hopefully, this will mean a lot more X-Books in the wake of Hickman's two mini-series.

FUCK YEAH X-STATIX! Not only was the original great, but that means we'll be once again showing mutants with occupations that are not "X-person" or "terrified refugee"... here's hoping.

I'm genuinely surprised there's not more X-Men/ My Hero Academa crossover fanfics. Like, I'm sure they're out there, but I look at the fanfic recs for MHA and there's not one X-Men crossover there — just a whole bunch from Reborn!, which I've never seen.

It's weird, because I've always thought you can fit MHA into regular Marvel continuity with little trouble — you could make it a rare good future where the entire Mutant population isn't slaughtered/ enslaved/ made into fascists/ some combination of two or all of the above.

[up][up]I’d wager the MHA audience skews younger, whereas a sizeable portion of X-Men fans either have been reading for decades or jumped onboard with the movies... which started almost two decades ago.

Plus there's the inherent American Comics vs Japanese Comics rivalry.

[up]... not sure if I've heard that one before. I mean, not all manga fans like comics and vice versa but that imo doesnt constitute a "rivalry."

But Wolverine is almost certainly a fan of MHA regardless.

Giant Sized X-Statix #1.

And, unfortunately, X-23 is in May.

I'd say I want Edie and Guy to finally get a happy ending, but that's arguably missing the point of the series.

It's not even Edie — the promo text asks "Who is the New U-Go Girl?"

Also, I'm pretty sure all those other characters died in the last issue of X-Statix, too, so I'm not sure how they are back. Although Dead Girl being there is a good indication.

Orphan, Dead Girl, and Vivisector died in the last issue. Drop was already back, and I see a new female Phat and another character who looks completely new.

So, does Rosenberg just want us all to forget that he had Karma literally use Illyana as a murder weapon? Because it seems like Rosenberg wants us all to forget that. What with Illyana being the one delivering the "all sins are forgiven" speech, instead of deliveringan "I am so close to killing you" speech. Which is the speech she should have delivered, given, again, Karma used her as a murder weapon. Karma took control of Illyana's mind and forced her to commit murder, that doesn't seem like the kind of thing that Illyana would forgive easily, or like the kind of thing she should forgive easily. It actually strikes me as the kind of thing that should create a lot of tension on the team, leave everyone doubting how much they can trust her, even leave Karma wondering how much she can trust herself. It's the kind of thing that should create a lot of great drama.

But nope, "all sins are forgiven," because why bother with the soap opera shit that is central to why people love the X-Men in the first place, right?

[up]Pretty much. As much as some people deride Soap, it's one of the reasons why X-Men got big in the first place and why it works. I've actually been reading Excalibur lately and as melodramatic as it can be at times, it still does a fantastic job of building relationships and getting you invested in the characters. Not all books need to be Soapy nor should they, but X-Men wouldn't be the same without it.

The finale to Rosenberg's run in coming in July. I assume the book will then be relaunched with a new creative team after Hickman's Powers of X and House of X is done.

God, I hope they bring in the writers of "Age of X-Man" to write main universe X-books.

It looks like X-Force is also ending and, with X-23 over and Mr and Mrs X over, it looks like they are primed for Hickman's run and then a subsequent relaunch of books.

Let me guess relaunch with more grimdark bullshit and deaths to make it seem "dramatic" like the "gold old days". >_>
