X-Men In General

Go To

This thread's for all of the X-Men comics and spin-offs (X-Force, X-Factor, New Mutants etc.), whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate X-Men, X-Men 2099, X-Men "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • X-Men 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Wolverine, Deadpool, Ms. Marvel and Cable.
  • Characters and comics that originated in X-Men and its related books but are no longer connected to the franchise are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their X-Men related stories here.

Discussions that are only about X-Men adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

    Original OP
Okay, it seems to me that the thread on "X-Men: Schism" has run its course, and since everyone seems to be commenting on how the conversation is talking about general parts of the franchise, I guess I should start a thread talking about all that.

I have to say that the X Men franchise has been going on for decades. Maybe not as many as the Superman franchise has, but it still has quite a number to it.

One thing I am certain of is that the franchise seems to be subverting Status Quo Is God in recent years. Magneto and Professor Xavier seem to be fading into the background, with Cyclops and Wolverine taking their places. A lot of villains associated to the X-Men have been killed off and have actually stayed dead so far.

All this gives me the general impression that the franchise is trying to reinvent itself. Do you think that's what's going on here?

I hate when people compare Trump to supervillains, because the supervillains are usually smart and competent.

The one exception is Mojo. Comparing Trump to Mojo is entirely valid.

But Trump is not Shaw. Shaw is smart, a competent businessman, an eloquent speaker, and a skilled schemer. Trump is none of those things.

Wasn’t New Mutants pushed back to make it more of a general superhero film?
Actually the reverse — Josh Boone wanted the film to be straight up horror, but the studio apparently wanted more of a soap opera film, forcing him to make changes. But then he cut a trailer that was definitely horror and it got great reactions, which caused the studios to ask him to do reshoots and make the film into, you know, an actual horror film. It's all explained neatly here:
At first, Boone and Lee wanted to make a horror movie, but Fox was initially resistant to that idea, as the studio didn't want to go "full horror." Sources say that Fox demanded a PG-13 rating and pushed back against the film's horror elements, such as excessive blood and scares. Eventually, everyone got on the same page, and together, they set out to make a YA movie that felt like a cross between Stephen King and John Hughes. Fox film chief Stacey Snider is basically quoted as calling New Mutants a superhero movie set in a Breakfast Club-like setting whose genre is more like The Shining than "let’s save the world."

And then... It happened.

It was released in early September and did incredibly well for Warner Bros., even beyond the studio’s wildest nightmares, er, dreams. In response, Fox cut a trailer for New Mutants that played up the scary elements from the film, essentially selling it as a straight-up horror movie — this despite the fact that in its first test screening, New Mutants scored the exact same number as the first screening of Deadpool and besides the very end, reshoots were deemed unnecessary. However, because of that well-received trailer, audiences were now expecting a horror movie.

At that point, Fox decided that instead of doing the three days of additional filming required to complete the YA movie that everyone had initially agreed to go make, the studio would change course and make a new version of the movie that was straight-up horror, which was what Boone and Lee originally wanted to do in the first place. It's a little like a diner sending back a meal at a restaurant — not because there was something wrong with it, but because they simply changed their minds and wanted to order a different entrée, or movie, in this case.

Alright so it’s gonna be a horrror film that’s also a supehero film?

Like how Logan was a Western that’s also a superhero film?

Meaning New Mutants will be primarily horror in the end?

If so then neat. [tup]

[up][up] Nice. I was pretty excited to have New Mutants play up the horror angle. I'm not actually a horror fan, but as a superhero fan, I want the genre to take more risks. Marvel takes risks in regards to who they choose to make a movie with - though at this point, the Marvel brand has damned near eliminated that risk, and they can do whatever they want with full confidence of making at least $750 million - but not when it comes to the conventions of the superhero genre.

So I'm excited for New Mutants.

If you thought he was staying dead for long, especially after how badly received the arc that he died in was, well then I think you'd get along well with my good friend the Prince of Nigeria...

I mean, he was never really dead after he died anyway — his younger teen self was still around. And now that his younger teen self is going away, of course they are bringing back Adult Cyclops.

It's never a matter of if they stay dead, unless it's Uncle Ben or Danny Chase on the DC side, it's always a matter of how and when they come back from the dead.

Much as I love Scott - and I love him a lot, he's one of my favourite characters - I wish he'd stayed dead longer. I like when characters stay dead for a while. It makes their returns mean more.

Three years, though he had an oh-so-brief resurrection in the recent Phoenix mini that revived Jean, just so she could forgive him.

I mean, the Phoenix Force brought him back to life for, like, two seconds, just so it could kill him in front of Jean.

Oh yeah Scott died during the whole X-Men vs Inhumans debacle which wasn’t too long ago.

So yeah he really hasn’t been dead that long, Wolverine’s been dead longer than him.

I also would like it if Scott stayed dead for a bit, even if he died in that awful Inhumans arc. Right now, the leaders of the X-Men are all women and I would like it to stay that way for a bit. But now that Disney's running things, and everything has been changing back to the status quo, I get why he's being brought back sooner.

I'm still hoping that Jean, Storm, and Kitty Pryde stay in charge of the X-Men, basically telling Cyclops and Wolverine, "You know, the last time you were charge, we got into a giant pissing contest. Let's not do that."

Hey it’s not like the women are incapable of getting into pissing contests too. tongue

Though I’d prefer for Scott to not become a leader again. With all the shit thats happened to him & the constant disrespect he gets from his so called family, he should take some time off to find himself & figure out a new way to find Mutant/Human coexistence.

The Dissasembled teaser also implies the return of Banshee. Seemingly all the "major" X-Men deaths are being reversed.
