If you guessed that this had something to do with the Stock Phrase, you're arguably correct. If you guessed that it has to do with the person using the Stock Phrase, nope! It's about a pre-emptive response by someone else to the person using the Stock Phrase.

Perhaps we could try something like Preemptive Winning Speech... only put a little more elegantly?

The fact that it was even on TRS clued me in that this wasn't what the name looked like. So I correctly guessed what it is, by something other than the trope name.

So support renaming.

There is now a single proposition rename crowner for this trope here. Feel free to tell me if you think it is a bit premature.

And the Winner Is... found in: 38 articles, excluding discussions.

Since January 1, 2011 this article has brought 6 people to the wiki from non-search engine links.

Low usage, misleading title, I support the rename.

Bump. The crowner's been running for three, four days with zero opposition.

And the winner is the option in favour of renaming "And the Winner Is..." tongue

Given the support for a rename, there is now an alternative titles crowner for this trope here. Feel free to add names you see fit.

I can't think of a better name right now, but I don't like "preemptive winning speech." The person usually waits until the award is given, but they still go to the stage and accept it because they weren't listening. That isn't preemptive - that's post-emptive.

Actually, I just read the examples on the page and I'm completely wrong. Disregard me please.

I might be reading too much into this, but one potential problem I see with Preemptive Winning Speech is that the character in question does not actually have to start giving an acceptance speech to fit this trope. For example, there are a few examples of people starting to get up or looking smug before the actual name of the winner is announced.

We could always make this trope more narrow to just be about preemptive winning speeches, but I think if we did that it would be a good idea to rewrite the description a bit and take out the examples which are not about actually giving speeches.

[up]Good points. Still, I'd consider Preemptive Winning Speech to be second-best to Assumed Win. There's something about Taken For Granted Win that sounds "too clunky".

Calling the crowner Assumed Win. Locking the crowner.

I've moved And the Winner Is... and all its wicks to Assumed Win and updated Renamed Tropes and the FAQ thread.

Given that there is no discussion, this can be closed now.
