Heh, when that movie comes out, I might ask her if she wants to go see it just to provoke her reaction [lol]

Speaking of which, anyone ever see the musical based on the album? I saw it when it was on tour with a friend of mine who'd seen it on Broadway already (twice!*

), and while he was in love with it (though he admitted the Broadway iteration was better), I thought it was just okay. I feel like it all came out far too cheesy to take seriously, and was trying to be far too serious to be taken as pure camp. I enjoyed it, but it was weird. Some scenes were pretty good (the show-exclusive "Too Much Too Soon" was decent and the scene for "Wake Me Up When September Ends" was actually pretty powerful), but others...well, to give a couple of examples, "Jesus of Suburbia" was not exactly meant to be acted out, there was some weird scene with a soldier flying in the air with what seemed to be the spiritual embodiment of morphine (context will do no help here), and "Favorite Son" was so homoerotic that...well, okay, that's actually another scene that worked amazingly well* [lol]

Oh, and while there wasn't much dialogue, what little there was was so full of pure, undistilled narm. (Quoth our plucky narrator, "DEAR MOM AND DAD, I SHOT DRUGS FOR THE FIRST TIME TODAY!")

There's an American Idiot movie being made? Wow, I am so seeing that if it comes out here. Anyway, big Green Day fan, have been since I heard Good Riddance (Time of your Life) when I was a kid and then I listened to their other music when I was 13. Outside of the first two albums, I like pretty much all of their albums so far, though I need to listen to Uno, Dos and Tre.

Someday, I'll see them live and look forward to that day.

[up][up]The Counting Trilogy (as I like to call it) is a bit of a mixed bag—as you might expect, what with it being so much material in such a short period of time—but for the most part it's pretty solid. Personally, most of the songs I like are on Uno, but that's not to say the other two are lacking (with the exception of Dos, perhaps—it's the weakest of the three). They're all still worth a listen.

RE: the movie: The only problem is, there hasn't been any news about it in months. The only real news that has ever popped up about it is that Tom Hanks is producing it and that Billie Joe might or might not be playing St. Jimmy in it (though that was just a rumor that took steam in a huge way). It hasn't even entered production yet, and it was slated for release by the end of this year.

Too early to call Development Hell?
Aparently, Billie Joe thinks Robert Pattinson would make a good Johnny. He was good in Harry Potter.

I dunno, I first heard about the plans for the movie when I was in high school, and I've been out of high school for over two years now.

I've finally managed to get a copy of Dookie. Meaning: I now have every studio album of theirs, up to and including American Idiot.

I remember seeing copies of Dookie in the discount bin at Kmart over 12 years ago. Back then, I had no clue who they were, since I sheltered myself from anything that wasn't country.

My sister has discovered Green Day too. She played me about five of their songs off her iPhone, and none of them sounded off-putting to me. Surely a far cry from back in 2004ish when I saw them perform "American Idiot" on Letterman — as I said, back then, I found them to be total ear rape.

[up]Oh, yes, especially 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours. tongue Oddly, that album's not too hard to find around my area. Kerplunk! isn't too uncommon either.

In other news, Green Day had a competition to make an Animated Music Video for Nuclear Family. Here's the winner:

Is 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours really that rare? I think I found a copy in one of my local music stores, though I may have just gotten it on Amazon. Love that album—probably my favorite Green Day album, with my favorite song of theirs on it:

[up][up][up]It's not what I'd call super-rare, but it's certainly not as easy to come across as any of their major-label material. Oddly, I came across my copies of it and Kerplunk! at the same Walmart, so it's really just a matter of looking around a bit.

I brought this up in the discredited albums thread, but why is it that Insomniac is so ignored nowadays? I rarely hear anything from it anymore aside from occasionally Brain Stew/Jaded (in contrast, stuff from dookie still gets regular airplay), and i've even heard people claim that its one of their worst albums. Personally, i think its a big improvement on Dookie and much better than the follow-up Nimrod (both albums were ok, but not great), and personally, its my favorite album by them.

*bump*

I'm kinda obsessed with "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" right now, even though it's 10 years too late to do that.

One thing, it's really mashupable:

Another thing, I'm having trouble classifying it under a genre.

Is it Emo Pop? Post Grunge? It's probably Butt Rock if anything, but what else is it?

Please help out our The History Of Video Games page.

I'd just call it a rock power ballad if I had to try to pigeonhole it.

I don't get why people are so anal about genre classifications, personally. I mean, I like diving into that myself from time to time for fun, but in the end I don't really care as long as the piece of music sounds good to me.
