Unlike BFG (which was spared from name change because of its precedence as an existing term in Doom), BFS is just a poorly thought out snowclone. The acronym is not obvious at first glance unless you've been in TV Tropes long enough to get the in-joke.

I vote that we swap it to Ridiculously Huge Sword.

BFS has existed since before this wiki was a gleam in Eddie and Janitor and Gus's eyes. I first heard in in 1979. It's not a snowclone we created.

As far as I know, it's BFG that's the snowclone of BFS, not the other way around.

Either way, they're both pre-existing terms.

Can we have it spelled out though? Same with Heroic BSoD. Every time I see it I'm liek, what the heck does BFS stand for? It just confuses me, and probably a lot of other people. The name itself I have no problem with, but the acronym I do.

[up]Probably not a good idea, since the "F" stands for "Fucking", which isn't the most polite thing to have sprawled across random trope pages.

Can't we just make it Freaking instead? Or but an asterisk sensor in the name with a custom title? Big F*cking Sword? Or Big Effing Sword? I really don't like how I have to click on the page to see what it is, and isn't the point to be able to get a good idea of what it is just from the title?

Fair point about the acronym, I'm familiar with both terms and it still takes me a few seconds to remember what they mean.

People got mad when Heroic BSoD was custom-titled to Heroic Blue Screen of Death. Just add Big Freaking Sword as a redirect, and use that if you like.

I think the problem is that the "F" stands for word-starting-with-F-of-your-choice. Sort of like RTFM (Read The Fine/Fuckin'/Freakin'/Foul/Fancy/Fabulous Manual).

This reminds me. The first line of the description actually does spell it out. Its Big. Fucking. Sword. About once a month, somebody comes along and changes it to something less offensive (Freaking is common), then it'll be reverted in short order. Can we please stop fucking doing this? Whatever your opinion of profanity, the F stands for Fucking, and has always stood for Fucking, and should not be neutered in an attempt to keep the wiki 'family friendly'. Make it a banning offense to change it.

Can't think of anything witty, so have this instead...

If we're going to make it a bannable offence, we should probably add a commented warning that changing it will get you banned.

If people are really doing that, a commented-out note is probably in order regardless of whether or not we ban over it.

Can't you leave messages with the %% markup that doesn't display on the page? In fact, there are several already there. Just add another that says not to change the profanity in the first line.

@Xtifr

Well, sort of. It definitely is supposed to stand for "fuckin(g)". The thing you mention is more that people who want to be decorous can't all agree on the same euphemism.

@Omega Kross

AFAIK, bowdlerizing is a bannable offense already. (Or at least a warnable offense.) You just might need to bring it up on Ask The Tropers when you see it happen.

[up]What is truth, grasshopper? Does it mean "fucking" because we said so? That's circular reasoning — our definition rests on...our definition. Does it mean "fucking" because that's what it originally meant? It probably did, but meanings change. "Awful" originally meant full of awe.

In this case, I would say that "fucking" is still the standard meaning of the "F", but not the exclusive one. That puts it in a class with RTFM, where many words can (and do) fit, rather than in a class with, say, WTF or MILF, both of which are utterly resistant to "fuck"-substitution. (With WTF, people will drop the final word rather than use an alternative, and with MILF, people just get coy when asked what it means.)

Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.

Although I'm not sure if BFB isn't a snowclone...
