Brought up in the Trope Repair Shop, we need to take out the in-jokey Understatement references. People are using it to make any given example "witty" rather than actually using the trope.
It's is extremely excessive, by early calculations there is a 95% misuse rate in that regard. But don't worry, the actual number to fix seems to be less than 9,000 (about 8700).
{Note, as of 12:30 am September 19th, the tally is down to 4228; We've gotten over halfway.}
{Note 2: as of 8:37 pm September 29th, it's down to 2412}
{Note 3: as of 6:16 Am October 3, there are 1868 wicks remaining. If the original assessment of ~90% misuse turns out to be correct, there will be between 800 and 900 good wicks left when we're done.}
{Note 4: As of 2:50 pm, October 6th, there were 1079 wicks remaining.}
{Note 5: as of 8:58 am on October 10, there were 729 wicks remaining. The entire list had been scrubbed. 111 of that 729 are those that a software glitch counts even though the page it's supposedly on no longer exists.}
{Note 6: Fast Eddie has modified the wick counter so that it no longer counts the dead namespaces "JBM" or "Crowning *". This killed off 75 of the phantom wicks remaining, for a final tally of 655 good wicks remaining of 8700+ original wicks}

I do wonder what is the next Maddy-led Special Effort?
The voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the groundReopened per Ask The Tropers discussion.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanLet's focus on Understatement for now. I know I've mentioned Sarcasm Mode and Blatant Lies as well in the ATT discussion but we shouldn't be dealing with multiple sarcasm tropes at once.
I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.I'll note it in the proper forum, but I think the manual labor should wait a bit. It would be a fairly simple job to provide the parser with a blacklist of strings never to form into a free-link. For example, "understatement" bracketed with any other text would not form a link, yet would still form a link when curly-braced.
Much, much less work to build than a crew would expend bruising their fingers for hours and hours.
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong. — H.L. MenckenWe're not doing what we did with IANMTU, if that's what you're suggesting.
I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.That was a substitution, right? Not what I was suggesting. I'm not sure how to say it any more clearly.
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong. — H.L. MenckenI've floated the idea to the moderator discussion, but it probably will take some time.
Sarcasm Mode and Blatant Lies need their own threads, yes. And a consensus is needed for Sarcasm Mode.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanMaybe it could be more clear. The text in the brackets other than the blacklisted word would still appear. It would just be that no link would be formed. You could think of the blacklist as the "Will Not Pothole" list.
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong. — H.L. MenckenThat would make the situation worse, because now instead of there being no indication of what trope it's potholed to, there would be no indication that it's supposed to be a pothole at all! Considering the tropes we're dealing with here, that would possibly be worse than even the IANMTU cleanup.
I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.Not sure I see how it would be worse. Why would we want to know if someone was potholing 'understatement', if all we would do with the information is do away with the pothole? It wouldn't be potholed to anything.
Why do you keep bringing up the IANMTU cleanup? Has nothing to do with this discussion, and frankly, I don't remember it being all that bad. It worked. The manual cleanup on understatement didn't. And won't, if repeated.

For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong. — H.L. MenckenIANMTU was an example of how not to clean up a trope because it broke pothole markup. This would be an example of how not to clean up a trope because it would defeat the purpose of the cleanup.
I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.Now you are just saying it was bad without offering any evidence. It didn't break pothole markup...and even if it did, it has nothing to do with this topic.You'll have to do better than just repeating the assertion.
Has anybody else got an issue with this suggestion?

For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong. — H.L. MenckenDiscussing the merits of the IANMTU cut is not on topic here. Discussion on eyebones' tech proposal goes into the Wiki Tech Wish List thread for it.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanAll wicks starting with Y/Z cleaned up
I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.Before I officially start the mass cleanup, I'm asking whether anyone else is even on board with this.
I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.Um, yes? Understatement is not for potholing any exaggeration (because most links are for these, actually) ever.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWaste of effort. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result each time is ... you know the quote. It is also pretty foolish
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong. — H.L. MenckenI agree that some kind of tech-based solution would be preferred to a manual fix, but the main problem with that is that I don't know if the admins are going to want to put that kind of effort into the current wiki setup or just implement it as something that TVT 2.0 will handle.
I suppose the middle ground would be to correct the sinkholes as you encounter them, while a better fix is awaited. I think it might be easy for a person to miss the message if it all goes down in a mass effort. The ones doing the mass change are not the ones who need the message and its behavioral change.
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong. — H.L. MenckenI am against any tech-based solution being implemented until after the cleanup, unless it's just redlinking like we did to This Troper. Cleanup comes first.
I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.Another ~40 wicks cleaned up tonight. Slowly but surely.
I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.Away for Thanksgiving, so I can't do much. My few cleanups this weekend are part of other cleanup projects.
I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.I will be able to resume the cleanup tonight!

Great job, everyone. You deserve some big s.
