Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

They're contemplating repealing Dodd-Frank?
Gee, I wonder why. Maybe they are bringing back Glass-Steagal after all?
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotWhat the hell is the point of holding a rally regarding something which has already been decided other than confirming for Trump that there are people who still love him?
Just being pure self-absorbed and narcissistic, that's all.
The only good fanboy, is a redeemed fanboy.
For someone like Trump, that's reason enough.
Disgusted, but not surprisedThe Spray Tan Kingnote needs the confirmation.
"You can reply to this Message!"Sorry for the repost, but all the states and cities who are now dedicating themselves to the Climate Agreement need something like this:

Nothing like a hymn to mobilize the people and remind them what they are fighting for....
Trump doesn't even have the guts to hold a rally that exploits Pittsburgh's name in Pittsburgh.
Sounds to me like someone should organize a "Pittsburgh for Paris" in Pittsburgh.
1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KVOregon apparently joined the Climate Alliance now. I think we'll see more states join pretty quickly.
And more cities joined the mayors climate alliance.

"You can reply to this Message!"Nevermind looked almost exactly like original
Although this is a good point. Trump's tweets may be able to be used against him in Russia probe

To make things even better, aside from the members in the Climate Alliance, Colorado, Delaware, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Virginia, and D.C are also being committed to the Paris agreement.
This whole reaction to the Paris agreement is part of why i'm so optimistic, because even when he does score a major policy victory it quickly goes downhill for him, and if this trend continues that would be great.
I also want to say the reason I am more optimistic than most is because pre-inaguration I thought he would do all the awful things he said in his campaign and then some, and his cabinet would help him push them all through, eventually the US would become an authoritarian society or something. And since the reality is very different that's why i'm still keeping my head up.
Just another day in the life of Jimmy NutrinI get a kick out of how D.C. is on the list.
Amusingly France fact checked Trump on Paris Agreement

And it's funny how bad things can bring out the best in people. We as a country got wise to how democracy only works when people participate in their government, and that we actually have to do something about the issues we care about in order to change them.

To anyone wondering why Wisconsin isn't on that alliance list (and likely won't be), two big cities that typically vote blue doesn't matter so long as your governor is Scott Walker.
Even without the supportive non-members, the Alliance states represent almost a third of the US' GDP.
Plus add in all those cities that are not in the states that have committed to it as well. Just, why did it take Trump? Why did it take Trump for people to wake to the crisis, and start taking the responsibility for fixing it. I never wanted Trump, but at the same time, people needed the wake up call.

If nothing else, Trump has accomplished one good thing: he's motivated a lot of people to get up off their complacent butts and do something (to oppose him.)
This Space Intentionally Left Blank. This is probably where someone says that "God works In Mysterious Ways."
It's the NIMBYHey! philosophy. Being able to whine about minor inconveniences is a luxury of someone else being responsible for maintaining the thing you're whining about. Everyone wants there to be a highway; they just don't want to live next to it. Everyone wants there to be phone service, they just don't want the unsightly antenna to be in their neighborhood.
With the exception of the crazy deniers like Trump, everyone wants efforts to combat climate change to be successful. They just don't want to be adversely affected by those efforts, personally. So they complain and whine and try to shove off the consequences on others, but when you tell them, "Fine, we're just going to let the planet die," they f*cking panic. That's not what they wanted either! That's worse!
These are the people who agree with the general policy, but when you explain that some sacrifices will need to be made, they mentally add, "by others".

My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.The new bill, which was introduced by two dozen Republican representatives and one Democrat, would prevent employers from discriminating against employees who own or carry firearms. House Bill 38 is currently in committee, but if it makes its way through the legislature, it could have a major impact on the workplace.
Although there aren’t many known cases in which an employer has discriminated against an employee for exercising Second Amendment rights, there has been some debate concerning employees keeping guns in their vehicles on employer property. Current law allows employers, or any private property owners, to forbid guns on their property, even if those guns are lawfully owned and contained in private vehicles. The issue has caused a rift, and House Bill 38 may be a way to work around the issue, explained Shira Goodman, executive director of Cease Fire PA, a group aimed at working with law enforcement and community organizations to prevent gun violence in the state.
I thought the gun pride types insist that their gun is what keeps them safe and not human rights acts? On a more serious note, I'm not sure of how "secure" storing it in your vehicle is. The tropics is probably an extreme case here, but I think I would risk ammo cooking off if I tried it here.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotWow, more Republican senators ignoring real problems and promoting fake problems. Just like their "religious freedom" bills they put up because somebody else has the freedom to ignore their religion.
Same here. I was just pointing out that if I wanted list-based humor, I'd prefer Cracked over Listverse easy.
