The General US Politics Thread

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Of course Nixon only stepped down because he was going to be impeached anyway. But Trump was never going to do that.

I'm not surprised Trump got his Facebook access back. Him and Zuckerberg have pretty similar business practices, like, you know, pissing all over and betraying people and then claiming what they made was your idea.

[up]Nixon also actually came to a Heel Realization. Something Trump would never do.

Trump's approval rating has apparently sunk below 30%. Isn't that the lowest a president's ever had?

W. Bush had 25% when he left office due to the Great Recession. The lowest Gallup has ever recorded is 22% for Truman during the Korean War.

So the question is whether that's the lowest it's ever been for Trump. I don't knit exact numbers but I do know that it's been mentioned here often that Trump's numbers, low though they are, have held steady, so a significant drop is something to note.

The lowest 538’s average every had Trump’s approval fall was 37%, they’ve currently got him at 38%. However his disapproval is currently at 58%, with 57% being his previously highest.

So his net approval is currently tied for the lowest it’s ever been, we’ll have to wait to see if it steadies out or keeps changing.

It seems there is somewhat of a divide forming under Trump supporters over supporting versus decrying the violence in DC. Some of them feel it just makes them look bad and gives the media/Democrats more ammo against them.

So the objection isn't that "violence is bad".

Trump tries to claw back billions from COVID vaccine distributor: The cuts have no chance of passing but are likely to further enrage health experts.

With mere days left in office, President Donald Trump has proposed $27.4 billion in brutal budget cuts—including clawing back 5.1 billion from global public health amid a raging pandemic. Of the proposed health cuts, $4 billion would be slashed from a vaccine alliance playing a central role in helping to distribute COVID-19 vaccines to low-income countries.

He really is trying to burn the country down at this point, it seems.

In other bad news that unfortunately won't go away on the 20th:

How law enforcement gets around your smartphone’s encryption: Openings provided by iOS and Android security are there for those with the right tools.

Though the smartphone protections that are currently available are adequate for a number of “threat models” or potential attacks, the researchers have concluded that they fall short on the question of specialized forensic tools that governments can easily buy for law enforcement and intelligence investigations. A recent report from researchers at the nonprofit Upturn found nearly 50,000 examples of US police in all 50 states using mobile device forensic tools to get access to smartphone data between 2015 and 2019. And while citizens of some countries may think it is unlikely that their devices will ever specifically be subject to this type of search, widespread mobile surveillance is ubiquitous in many regions of the world and at a growing number of border crossings. The tools are also proliferating in other settings like US schools.

As long as mainstream mobile operating systems have these privacy weaknesses, though, it's even more difficult to explain why governments around the world—including the US, UK, Australia, and India—have mounted major calls for tech companies to undermine the encryption in their products.

Biden: "Here's my plan for getting the Covid vaccine distributed quickly and rebuilding the economy."

Trump: "I'm conferring with a pillow salesman about imposing martial law."

Just to be clear, the "liberal wish list" the writer attacks Biden's plan for are, paragraph by paragraph are:

  • $15 minimum wage
  • $1,400 checks
  • Increased unemployment money
  • Money for local governments
  • Money for poverty assistance
  • Money for schools and businesses

And this is all protested against in the name of the national debt and that the $9 billion relief bill passed last month is mostly sufficient for keeping people afloat.

@Redmess: We kinda already knew about the Smartphone thing. I made it no secret that intelligence agencies can track AND listen to you via anything with an internet connection and microphone, simply for the fact advertising companies already do so, and they have an agreement. Folks like the NSA and such just don't because it's a hell of a lot of work, so they just have an algorithm that's sorting through, and "red tags" "suspicious activity" that's then acted on.

In other news, I got in contact with one of my republican friends who's been incommunicado since the 6th. From how she was talking, I get the feeling she's been having a massive crisis of faith, and just focusing on working. She's also gotten both doses of the vaccine, not sure which, as she's a Pharmacy Technician who works just down the road from a hospital, so she was considered a front-line worker.
