Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

terrorist groups don't usually shut down because they run out of money,it's usually because they run of people on account of the game of wack of mole when it comes to their members
New theme music also a boxI think of the NRA as it currently is as a church rather than a terrorist organization. Well, more of a Scam Religion. They preach a idealized way of life and link to guns as part of preserving it while bilking every cent from members while also trying to indoctrinate them.
It'll collapse without payments due to overexpansion.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. This is actually an excellent reading of their organization, mind if I steal that?
They absolutely are cult-like, or at the least religious in a sense. They’re built around blind belief and acceptance of gospel more than any sort of substance.
Though, there’s also an argument that they’re just plain old corrupt. Look at the cross-section between NRA board members and firearms executives.

They should have sent a poet.So a couple semi-big stories.
- Alex Jones claimed that the reason he put forth the Sandy Hook conspiracy theory was the "trauma of the media and the corporations lying so much" that caused him to distrust everything, "kind of like a child whose parents lie to them over and over again." He called it a "a form of psychosis" - which I guess isn't wrong, technically speaking.
- The fetal heartbeat abortion ban is headed to the Georgia governor's desk.
- And body-cam footage from the shooting death of Willie McCoy was released - the rapper was sleeping in his car when he was approached by six officers, who opened fire after he woke up. All six of them. And one of them was already under investigation for shooting a different man, who was completely unarmed.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"The NRA executives are a bit like the corporate churches (which have no charities but their own proliferation) that are also in bed with the GOP's heads. They make the END OF CIVILIZATION as the enemy while raking in all the bucks from pillaging their own followers.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.I much prefer range voting to list voting.
I wonder why Jones is backtracking now.

The civil suits, mainly.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Incidentally, a recent story the NY Times printed about Jones:
How Alex Jones and Infowars Helped a Florida Man Stalk Sandy Hook Families – Mr. Jones and Infowars gave Wolfgang Halbig airtime, a camera crew and help raising money to harass Sandy Hook shooting victims’ parents.

When it comes to Alex Jones, the thing that always comes to my mind is The Last Podcast on the Left's series on Bill Cooper, one of the major players in modern Conspiracy Theory/Thought, and even he could tell Alex Jones was full of it.

Obviously this is scare tactic to get funding, but could you imagine if this was true?Without the NRA lobbying they might actually get gun control laws passed!
It actually might be true. Per the article, NY Governor Andrew Cuomo put pressure on banks and insurance companies to review any financial relationships they have with the NRA. As a result, it's becoming harder and harder for the NRA to insure their meetings, headquarters, etc.
And you can't just not have insurance in an organization wherein literally every single person participating is carrying like eight loaded guns at all times everywhere.
There is a very real possibility that Cuomo might kill the NRA, with the murder weapon being an insurance blacklist. And nothing would make me happier.

My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.Of course Trump is too stupid to realize that cutting foreign aid to these nations will increase the amount of desperate people coming into our country 'illegally', not decrease it. It does appear to me that Trump is gearing up to shut down the American-Mexican Border, and this is just a prelude.
Yeah, it's one of those where it's rather easy to see the logic in the thought process - "These countries need to shape up so these people stop coming here illegally, so we won't help them until they do!" - but even easier to see how it would just exacerbate the situation.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Nah that’s not the thought process, the thought process is “theses assholes are sending people here to take advantage of us, why should we help them when they’re attacking us?”
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranNever would it occur to the likes of Trump that foreign aid might be the best solution. Since in his words, they immigrate from shitholes, why not make those regions not shitholes? You decrease immigration rates because people are less inclined to leave their country.
And spend Usonian money on all those brown people? Madness, I tells ya!
Do I need to pothole Sarcasm Mode, or is the venom in my words clear enough?
This is the Internet. You should always point out the sarcasm just to be safe.
Disgusted, but not surprisedI mean, it either goes to them or the rich corporations. Pick your poison. That's what I'd say to them.
This move is basically the result of the combination of having a man with the empathy of a neo-nazi and the wits of a crass reality show star in the White House, with the consequences, as usual, only reserved for the already downtrodden.
Life is unfair...[REDACTED]

^Thank you.
I still suspect the people behind Trump, if not Trump himself, of having the low cunning of Foxes. It serves their interests if more illegals show up, because that perpetuates the crisis upon which they base their propaganda. So now Trump announces a policy that will predictably produce moreillegals- well, maybe I'm just cynical, but that seems awful convenient for them.
The Republican Party boss men don't actually want effective immigration control. They make too much money employing immigrants illegally-low wages and taking advantage of their precarious immigration status to force them to work under conditions any citizen would sue them to death for.
They aren't happy when their voters start pushing them to actually crack down on that, and they only support the Wall because it's an ineffective joke that nonetheless turns their base out.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is touring a Kentucky coalmine as she was invited by a Republican lawmaker
I wouldn't do it,don't trust them enough not to try and seal the mine while they're inside it!Still, props to her for cooperating

I really hope the NRA goes under, they're basically a terrorist organization at this point.
