Even at the time it came out, there were some mutters that it seemed more like looking for brownie points than actually doing the work of representation. It's only since everything else she's said has turned to the evidence that wizards vanish afterward, and that the prequel movies that cover exactly when Dumbledore was at peak Ho Yay are ignoring it that it's become loudly trumpeted evidence of Rowling being Terrible.

She also insisted they include Kreacher in Order of the Phoenix because he'd be important later, so he got an irrelevant cameo in that movie, but then I don't even remember him actually being in the Deathly Hallows movies at all.

Not to mention she keeps liking posts by TERFs attacking trans women on Twitter (and defending it by saying it was accidental, but not denouncing them).

JK’s twitter conduct is something it’s perfectly understandable to get upset over, but a mischaracterisation of how she revealed that Dumbledore is gay is not.

While it's clear she was planning it from the start, she didn't make any mention of it in the text. Some people might get the impression that she made it up for brownie points, but the actual complaint is (and always was) that she decided on the background for brownie points, but didn't have the guts to include it within the text itself.

I did get a pining vibe from Jim Dale's performance of Dumbledore's telling of what happened with Grindlewald in the audiobook, before she revealed it.

Not to say that's more than elevating subtext to clearer subtext.

i suppose i would have agreed with the notion that jk rowling had good intentions, but then you have to deal with the fact that she tries to claim that harry potter is this super diverse series by suddenly going "oh yeah and hermione is black" despite explicitly describing her as white in the books. it's a shitty way to look progressive while delegitimizing actual minority representation in fiction.

That's not what she said about Hermione. She responded to the fandom interpretation of her as black by saying, "never said she wasn't! Good idea!" and then casting a black actress in Cursed Child.

Yeah she never claimed Hermonie was black, my memory is that they cast a black women to play her in Cursed Child and racists lost their shit, JK then made the point that she never actully said in the text that Hermonie is white so their bitching didn’t even have the leg of “they’re deviating from the text” to stand on.

This is my issue with the JK complaints, she’s done some legitimately horrid stuff on Twitter, but people keep making shit up about her conduct in situations where she did nothing wrong.

sorry, misspoke, but the point still stands that she actually legitimately said she wasn't black in the books, and she's trying to cast it as otherwise to look more progressive. i remember her doing the same thing previously when someone asked if there were any jewish wizards (meanwhile, the bankers at gringotts aren't very subtle)

You usually draw attention to the color of someone's face to highlight their emotion.

I just saw a post going around Tumblr where somebody's tweet about deciding to switch back to Animorphs because KA Applegate probably isn't a TERF got replied to by Applegate herself declaring she's a proud mother of a 20-year old trans woman.

I mean I just saw the same post because Bi reblogged it so yeah.

Here's a cached version of that link that I was able to get.

It still boggles my mind how tied up people get over how fictional characters have to be white.

That page specifically says, "this is the evidence we found of what was originally in her mind, we don't care either way, and we approve of the Cursed Child casting. Please don't send angry letters about how she should be white or black".

And then the comments devolved into the usual toxic sludge.

tl;dr is that Ubisoft did a rather ham-fisted case of Cutting Off the Branches in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey that effectively erased any player choices with regard to romance and character sexuality.
