This thread exists to discuss British politics.
Political issues related to Northern Ireland and the Crown Dependencies (the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) are also considered on-topic here if there's no more appropriate OTC thread for them.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
As with other OTC threads, off-topic posts may be thumped or edited by the moderators.
- There is a dedicated thread to discuss LGBTQ+ rights in the United Kingdom. That doesn't mean it's always off-topic here, but unless something's directly linked to political events, that's probably a better thread for it.
- There's also a separate thread to talk about your favourite British Prime Ministers.
Recent political stuff:
- The vote to see if Britain should adopt Alternative Voting has failed.
- Lib Dems lose lots of councils and councillors, whilst Labour make the majority of the gains in England.
- The Scottish National Party do really well in the elections.

I don't believe the convict on day release is the same person who grabbed the Narwhal tusk.
Not how folklore works, mate.
I've seen something saying he was a Polish man whose name isn't being released to respect his privacy, but I can't remember where.
TV Tropes's No. 1 bread themed lesbian. she/her, fae/faerMaybe, but I'd rather not be the starting point for internet folklore that some people only kind of hear about and assume is established fact.

I, for one, enjoy the thought of a far right meltdown.
This "terrorist" attack (please, the guy was obviously more a case of being a sandwich short of a picnic with inadequate supervision) was stopped with the help of a Polish immigrant.

Why would that cause a meltdown?
Poland is the Alt-Right's favorite country atm. Didn't you hear of "Based Poland?" The Alt-Righters absolutely celebrate the Polish Independent March or the fact that Poland treats the LGBT community as well as minorities horribly.
Certified: 48.0% West Asian, 6.5% South Asian, 15.8% North/West European, 15.7% English, 7.4% Balkan, 6.6% ScandinavianI imagine they'll just use it as proof that immigrants can be integrated into British society as long as they're Christian.
Then they'll go right back to bashing Polish immigrants once this attack isn't being discussed any more.
They’re not the British right’s favourites, Polish people are some of the most hatred immigrants in the UK, as they’re viewed as stealing British jobs (mainly in construction).
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranHmm, I'm seeing reports that Jo Swinson has done a deal with the Tories - they're not standing against her in her seat.
Not in the least bit surprising of course that the closet Tory is already in bed with them.
I hope Labour does likewise, and that the SNP give Jo a quick boot. (Of course, if they do, she'll just parachute into a by-election, but such is life.)
In 2015 the SNP kicked her out, so its theoretically possible! Very unlikely though; the SNP will do well but my expectations are some way below those of many, I think. The Tories - and anyone here who just wants Brexit done - will do quite well in Scotland too.
My own constituency is a foregone conclusion Tory. It went Labour in the Blair years, the SNP got it in 2015 but then it became Tory again and I can't see that changing this time. The incompetence of the SNP candidate doesn't help. Richard Arkless is based in Stranraer, right at the far corner of the constituency and a 2 hour drive from Dumfries (where I live, the biggest town except Carlisle in an 80 mile radius despite only having 40,000 people. Stranraer is 2nd biggest in the region with about 10,000). He's too detached from everything to be able to do anything.
Still I remain a Green Party member, but I'll probably vote SNP anyway, as tactically voting Labour is unlikely to do anything. I would if it would help, but both Labour and the SNP are battling for a distant 2nd here.
The current MP here opened an office for, as far as I can tell, purely the sake of campaign advertising. I say this because it's on the high street and I fully expect the shopfront to go back to being empty in two weeks.
What a great reminder that things keep closing.
Avatar SourceI’ve been floating around a lot, I’ve just come back from campaigning down in the semi-marginal my parents live in, my constituency is one of the safes Tory seats in London but a neighbouring one is a marginal that I’ll try and campaign in next weekend. For the election itself I’ll be down at my parents for both Election Day and the count itself.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranOh joy, I've just seen (on Facebook so I can't link it) campaign leaflets from the Tories in Stirling, who are running an ex-Labour defector. The leaflet uses red colours and the headline "Labour man backs Kerr" (Kerr is the Tory candidate). So obviously a Tory leaflet designed to look like a Labour one..
Nothing surprising here at all, but very frustrating as so many will fall for it. Labour are a distant third there so it's Tories or SNP.
I would have thought most people will vote on party - so they're not likely to accidentally vote for the Tory, whatever misleading leaflets are dispersed. Even if they're voting for the local candidate, they'll either use the party as a double check they've not gotten mixed up or be too well informed to be fooled anyway.
Could one of you fine folks add an entry to the Nouveau Riche page that explains the quote at the top of the page? Thanks.

Never trust anyone who uses "degenerate" as an insult.Explanation: old rich inherit their furniture.
As for editing the page... later? Eventually? Maybe? I'm useless?
(Currently avoiding washing my hair as if I wouldn't both enjoy the shower and like having clean hair.<headdesk>)
You should probably take that to the page quote thread in the long term projects forum as, if a page quote needs explaining it is not doing its job and should be replaced.

I dunno, seems pretty self-explanatory to me. Even without knowing who Heseltine is, the quote The trouble with Heseltine is that he had to buy all his furniture pretty much conveys the disdain Old Money has for New Money, and conveys the difference between the two. New Money would have to buy their mansion and all the items within. Old Money already had it.
Heseltine's background is that he was the son of a factory owner and while training as an accountant he inherited around £1000 (about £23k in 2016 money) and with a friend started a property company. This got him into money, with which he created a media company and he's now a multimillionaire. His Other Wiki page notes that he had to buy his first Jaguar second hand and cheap, for example.
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."Well at least one person didn't which probably means there are more. Besides were British, we instinctively know about this sort of class related stuff.
I just don't get what's to be explained by that quote, in conjunction with the elaboration in the rest of the article.
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."Possibly they mean that Heseltine should have an entry in the Real Life section, since he was referenced as being an example of Nouveau Riche.
Hm. I think the quote is slightly inaccurate. I think Alan Clark quoted what Jopling said as being 'The trouble with Michael is that he has had to buy all his own furniture.'
Can anyone confirm?
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.Corbyn has acquired an interesting new suit... the red pinstripes say "for the many not the few".
Oh, and of course everyone's laying into Johnson for politicising a tragedy AND focusing on the least relevant point.
Then there's the whole mess about the changed pension age and how the Tories have backed off on compensating the women affected. Some are voting Labour, some aren't voting at all, and some are still voting Tory for, what I can see anyway, the logic of "but the ECONOMY!"
A subject I fully expect only a tiny handful of the people using it as a voting reason know a thing about.

Well, Mr Ivory gets points for improv.
And, the most expensive shiv, ever. Seriously, if that doesn't go down in prison lore forever, there's no justice at all.
