This thread exists to discuss British politics.
Political issues related to Northern Ireland and the Crown Dependencies (the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) are also considered on-topic here if there's no more appropriate OTC thread for them.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
As with other OTC threads, off-topic posts may be thumped or edited by the moderators.
- There is a dedicated thread to discuss LGBTQ+ rights in the United Kingdom. That doesn't mean it's always off-topic here, but unless something's directly linked to political events, that's probably a better thread for it.
- There's also a separate thread to talk about your favourite British Prime Ministers.
Recent political stuff:
- The vote to see if Britain should adopt Alternative Voting has failed.
- Lib Dems lose lots of councils and councillors, whilst Labour make the majority of the gains in England.
- The Scottish National Party do really well in the elections.

Maybe but it feel that for some, the UK is playing a prank that have goes waaaaay to far and as wearing thin a this moment, "Fuck you EU we dont need you, now please wait were....and kept waiting....and kept waiting".
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"There needs to be a certain level of pressure to keep MPs moving towards something, but neither the majority of the Commons nor basically anyone else wants an accidental no deal whilst it can be avoided. So long as something is happening there's not a good reason to withhold further extensions.
Avatar SourceI don't think it would be fair for anyone to complain about this particular delay when it only was done to eliminate any chance of a no deal, while the vote on Johnson's agreement was postponed by only a mere two or three days.
Life is unfair...Because the hard-core Leavers decided that this delay killed Brexit forever.
"Yup. That tasted purple."If only.
"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ CyranThen my all means, what would take to kill brexit forever?
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"Well, to be fair, the longer the clusterfuck drags on, the more likely it is that either Parliament or a referendum will throw up their hands and decide to Remain.
I despise hypocrisy, unless of course it is my own.The death of Rupert Murdoch might do it.

"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ CyranA lot of British media would need to undergo some major reforms to kill Brexit forever. As long as British media continues to feed the whole "fuck Europe" narrative, the desire for Brexit will linger on like a bad stench.

Disgusted, but not surprisedSo Bercow blocked today's vote on the deal, and has shifted in "no fucks left to give" mode when it comes to throwing shade at the Brexiteers accusing him of bias.
"Yup. That tasted purple."Labour implementing Leveson would be a start. Hence Labour continue to be the country's best chance at defeating Brexit - both in the short and long terms.
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."Well that explains why the media keeps slating them then.
"Yup. That tasted purple."Why do I have the feeling that once this whole excruciatingly tiresome ordeal is over (one way or the other), there will be folks who'll just drop on the spot and sleep for a week or so just to recover all the energy they used up thought it?
That said, if BJ (the "Big Boy") does ask for extension, what happens next after that and how will the sides take it?
Doesn't it just?
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."I suspect that should the extension be granted we will get a quick VONC followed by an election.
"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ CyranThat is if it's granted, there's also the possibility that the EU would impose some conditions to the extension to get things going.
Instead of focusing on relatives that divide us, maybe we should try to find the absolutes that tie us.It will be granted, No Deal is still worse for the EU than letting this farce continue - the interesting thing will indeed be if any conditions are attached, and how much of an extension will be granted. I've heard the end of January floated about, and I hope that's wrong because that's not enough time to do much of anything.
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."Is 10 days really enough to pass an extension though?
Doctor Who — Long Way Around: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13536044/1/Doctor-Who-Long-Way-AroundIt’s enough time for an election, I think.
"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ CyranElections need six weeks.
"Yup. That tasted purple."It’s the end of January, so we’d have 12 weeks minus Christmas.
"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ CyranToday the Northern Ireland Assembly convened for the first time since 2017. The sitting was abandoned when MLAs failed to muster a cross-community majority for a new speaker, without which further business could not proceed.
As a result, despite the best efforts of the DUP abortion and same-gender marriage are now legal in Northern Ireland.
"Yup. That tasted purple."Huzzah!

I don't think Johnson will go that far. All he has to do is maintain this narrative that he wants to get brexit done, can get brexit done, and that it's just everyone else opposing him. Besides, i don't think the EU will fall for transparent veto attempts. Even Hungary has nothing to gain by frustrating brexit.
The EU has little to lose from an extension, other than lengthening an endlessly frustrating track. Denying them, however, will be bad for them. They don't want to be seen as the ones frustrating brexit. If the UK asks, they'll grant one, no matter how much Johnson personally may not want one.
