This thread exists to discuss British politics.
Political issues related to Northern Ireland and the Crown Dependencies (the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) are also considered on-topic here if there's no more appropriate OTC thread for them.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
As with other OTC threads, off-topic posts may be thumped or edited by the moderators.
- There is a dedicated thread to discuss LGBTQ+ rights in the United Kingdom. That doesn't mean it's always off-topic here, but unless something's directly linked to political events, that's probably a better thread for it.
- There's also a separate thread to talk about your favourite British Prime Ministers.
Recent political stuff:
- The vote to see if Britain should adopt Alternative Voting has failed.
- Lib Dems lose lots of councils and councillors, whilst Labour make the majority of the gains in England.
- The Scottish National Party do really well in the elections.

> If she somehow gets to an airport in Turkey, that's another story.
My concern is her conveniently disappearing during her trip to Turkey,I would not trust Turkey's Government to delivor her
New theme music also a boxHer children deserve to be cared for, they’ve done no wrong. Beyond that I stand that the system has failed when a 16 year old is both willing and capable of what she did.
Her parents failed, her teachers failed, social services failed, her local community failed, it took a lot of failure to cause this.
Oh and like hell should her kids be given to anyone in her family back here, they’ve already screwed up bad enough to radicalise one child, I’d rather not give them a chance to do that to more.
Plus from a raw security perspective she’s less of a problem here in jail than over there out of our control.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranIf she somehow gets back, letting her raise a child is out of a question with those attitudes, though.
Avatar SourceYeah, I'm not 100% comfortable with someone who is fine with seeing journalists beheaded raising another human being either.
Disgusted, but not surprisedYeah, kid needs to be placed into government care/be put up for adoption ASAP.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. This Week is ending in July.
So it seems the Daily Mail is haemoraging advertisers again after it refused to retract a story about Soham Murderer Ian Huntley claiming to be a transwoman even after it was proven false.
"Yup. That tasted purple."And this is why I was hesitant to believe that jam story.
Disgusted, but not surprisedAnd good riddance. I'm guessing it would be too much to hope that the entire paper goes under?
The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerIt won't go under any time soon unfortunately,it's got too much money behind it
New theme music also a boxIt might lose its effectiveness if its readers abandon it. Money can keep it afloat but not force people to read it.
True, but this was literally a case of them choosing readership over good PR.
I strongly suspect that the people who want to read stories about one of Britain's most infamous murderers coming out as trans, or how the "trans mafia" wants to ban the word mother actually care it's made up.
TV Tropes's No. 1 bread themed lesbian. she/her, fae/faerIt has been the Daily Mail's MO for year to tell the readers what they want to hear - they even portray the same story differently depending on where they sell the paper. So I doubt that this will sink them.
My MP died today. It's the end of an era. He was damn good MP, too.
RIP Paul Flynn.
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.John Oliver is adressing Brexit a third time.
I haven’t seen it yet, but please tell me he brings back the kid singing to the tune of An die Freude.
Hitokiri in the streets, daishouri in the sheets.Something about Oliver's bits about Brexit always seems to me like it's lacking teeth. I get that it's meant to be a "comedy" show, and meant for an American audience, but...
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."Seven Labour M Ps just quit the party.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranLooks like it was the standard awkward squad - Umunna, Berger, and company. They'll apparently not be contesting their own safe seats but Labour marginals, so this seems to be a pretty direct act of sabotage.
What's precedent ever done for us?Even with my very limited knowledge of UK politics, I wasn't surprised to see Umunna on that list.
Disgusted, but not surprisedOne other important thing - they're not a new party, but an alliance of independents. That means they don't have to disclose their funding.
What's precedent ever done for us?"M Ps will sit as independent group after resigning in protest at party’s Brexit stance and its handling of antisemitism" - I can buy them being Remainers that don't like Labour not going hard Remain, but the antisemitism garbage excuse again?
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."A bunch of them are significant players in Labour Friends of Israel. I guess they decided that was an oxymoron.
What's precedent ever done for us?While I appreciate what they are doing, this probably wasn't the right time to do it. They should have done it some time last year.
Yes, the UK doesn't seem to have any legal obligation to facilitate her return since she's in a place where there is nothing set up to do so. If she somehow gets to an airport in Turkey, that's another story.
Disgusted, but not surprised
