What needs to be done to help?
The Revolution Will Not Be TropeableWe need to split Uncanny Valley into two different tropes, per the crowner. However, I've been so busy with the recent crisis, I haven't gotten around to it.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerRight. Is there something I can do to help without taking the time to do the entire thing? Like dividing the examples on the page or into sandboxes or something?
The Revolution Will Not Be TropeableAh, if you feel like it, you can make sandboxes to sort examples. It would help a lot, I think.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerSure. At the very least I can get started.
The Revolution Will Not Be TropeableLooks like this needs cleanup still.
Waiting on a TRS slot? Finishing off one of these cleaning efforts will usually open one up.This site, why, what good reason is there to keep the subjective page. This isn't opinions wiki, or reactions wiki, we're about the methods of writing fiction! Not what you think about fiction!
Tropes are devices and conventions that a writer can reasonably rely on as being present in the audience members' minds and expectations. On the whole, tropes are not clichés. The word clichéd means "stereotyped and trite." In other words, dull and uninteresting. We are not looking for dull and uninteresting entries. We are here to recognize tropes and play with them, not to make fun of them.
With the homepage supporting this position I object to any subjective pages dealing with uncanny valley. Furthermore I move to merge uncanny valley and Uncanny Valley Girl, because we don't need to tropes that are about the exact same thing but ones for girls! The Same But More Specific, is to be avoided when possible and this is a possible case. Furthermore, but only listing objective instances of uncanny valley, we discourage the use of further subjective pages. The little history on the real world term and the graph can stay, we can remove the subjective entries, we can remove the redundant pages, we can do all three in one go.
If a troper must insist on listing graphics they find creepy then Direct Them Toward Nightmare Fuel, let that be our catch all scary Opinion Myopia page. Its one "stuff we think is scary but doesn't relate to tropes as our homepage defines them in any meaningful way" page too many as is. Two is way too many.
Modified Ura-nage, Torture RackThis can sort of apply to real human. In A.I., the actors playing androids had their hair and skin treated to look a little off and were careful never to blink on camera and soem other stuff to make them seem off. I don't see why intentional and accidental invocation need to be separate tropes, though.
This isn't just animatronics and CG. It can also apply to stop-animation. It's essentially the same issue.
Because "accidental" is not a trope, as this website defines it, and thus has no purpose on a trope page. If you want a page for accidents that caused fearful audience reactions tell the Moderators or Administrators to bring back Accidental Nightmare Fuel after all, a crowner was put up to not only keep both Nightmare Fuel pages but to make a third one to further distinguish them.
Until then, audience reactions are not our wikis focus, nor are the pages particularly wanted or encouraged. Why? Because they easily become complaints because that's everyone's favorite reaction to share and also everyone else's least favorite to read about, right behind gushing.
And seeing how that crowner, along with at least three before it, were overturned at an administrative whim, I see no reason why yet another crowner should put up yet another page which is essentially Accidental Nightmare Fuel Uncanny Addition. If you want the accidental page back, bring it back properly but we really should not have super specific subjective pages. Broader the better if not outright trivia.
Modified Ura-nage, Torture RackCould you take this very general policy discussion to a Wiki Talk thread, please? Also, Uncanny Valley is not merely an Audience Reaction, it's a psychological effect with great relevance to storytelling and thus seems to warrant a page on the wiki.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanUncanny valley is real and has relevance to story telling? It deserves a page on TV Tropes? That refutes me how? I wasn't suggesting you cut uncanny valley, I was saying only keep the invoked examples, the plot points, the tropes! We don't need an entire page that's basically a glorified accidental nightmare fuel. Just make one uncanny valley page and list examples from works, like every other trope page does. Examples Are Not Arguable. If someone thinks they have an "arguable" example it belongs on Nightmare Fuel and nowhere else.

What would be the best way to fix the page?
Sorry, haven't had the chance to touch upon this one. It may take a bit. Whoever feels like helping with the split, go ahead.
