This name has always bugged the heck out of me. I don't know if it bothers anyone else, but in my opinion it should, and let me give you my reasons:

  1. It's not very intuitive. (This one is debatable.)
  2. It's a pointless reference. It doesn't illustrate anything about the trope at all; it's just there for the sake of being there.
  3. It's a pointless anime reference (more fuel for the "hurr durr more like anime tropes amirite?" people).
  4. It sounds really clunky. "Record of Loudness War" doesn't really flow off the tongue very well.
  5. Most damning of all, it's not even a good pun! In fact, it barely qualifies as a pun at all. In my opinion, it's not clever and it's not amusing, it's just lame and annoying.

Plus, it's easy; there's a redirect entitled just "The Loudness War," so all that would have to be done is just switching around the regular title and the redirect and the problem's solved. That way you don't even have to change any of the links!

If you guys disagree, though, I totally understand why, since it's not really very important and Redirects Are Free. Just something that always bugged me.

Well, it has nothing to do with anime, and nothing to do with war. It's not a trope about records... There's only one word in the title that has anything to do with the trope. Not a good title.

I don't understand the title even after reading the definition.

Actually, I don't understand the definition even after reading the definition. What is this trope about, exactly?

Rhymes with "Protracted."

Records and songs that max out the loudness in them, you know how on one TV station some comercials are louder than the actual show? That's this but for songs.

I for one am meh I think the pun works somewhat "a record or song that has a war with your volume control". But having Zero to do with Record Of Lodoss War (Awesome 90s D&D style fantasy anime) is a strike against it.

I agree on renaming, if it's going to be a snowclone/pun based on a work title, it should at least have something to do with the work in question.

I agree with this:

It's a pointless reference. It doesn't illustrate anything about the trope at all; it's just there for the sake of being there.

It sounds really clunky. "Record of Loudness War" doesn't really flow off the tongue very well.

it's not even a good pun! In fact, it barely qualifies as a pun at all.

While I agree that it gives the "hurr durr more like anime tropes amirite?" people more fodder, I don't care about them.

But while I don't think that the name is particularly unintuitive, it still could be... well, more intuitive.

Amusingly, not even the page itself likes the pun.

Bottomline: I wouldn't be against a rename. But I don't think that The Loudness War is that much better. How about Louder Is Better (which is also the caption of the image)?

I don't think there's anything wrong with calling it a "loudness war" what that means is that there is, in a sense, a war to see who can put out the "loudest" music. I just have a problem with the crappy anime pun.

It's kind of a difficult concept for some people to wrap their heads around, so here's a good video illustration:

Every time I read that trope page and then look through my own music library, I get a little depressed at how brickwalled they all are. Oh well.

^I think Louder Is Better is actually a pretty good name. A lot more intuitive.

It's not a great name, but I don't see any real reason that it needs changing. Louder Is Better is fine if it is changed, though.

I guess it is.

I was thinking Wall Of Sound, after Phil Spector's trademark production style which clearly fits in this trope.

^ Not really. Spector's Wall Of Sound wasn't about simply pushing the volume up as high as he could. It was the lushness and depth of the instruments as opposed to the starkness of the earlier pop sound — guitar, drums, bass and [other]. The Wall Of Sound was using string and brass sections, or even full orchestras to back pop songs, or laying down multiple tracks of the basic instruments rather than cranking the volume.

I'd have said Louder Is Better works well, as it is an obvious description, and not a terribly stretched pun relating to anime (that doesn't relate back to the definition.)

I didn't realize that it was a pre-existing term. Between that and the clarity of it, I support that switch.

Being a pre-existing term does not always make it the most intuitive alternative (take a look at what happened to Schrodingers Cat).

Having said that, I don't have a problem with Loudness War, I just favor Louder Is Better.

I agree with the need for a rename.

Either The Loudness War or Louder Is Better would work, in my opinion.

[up][up]Schrodingers Cat trope wasn't exactly like the Schrodingers Cat experiment, though. A 'character that is both alive and dead in two different canons' is not what the term was about. Which would explain the misuses, I suppose.

There's several examples listed of people intentionally compressing the sound to make it loud and unsubtle. That seems to indicate it's a trope and not just a piece of trivia.

Funny thing about this title, it's only an anime reference to those who know it's an anime reference. Otherwise it's just a mention of the Loudness War, that is what this phenomenon called with a few extra words tacked on the front.

Thing is, there are 781 people out there who think they know what the tvtropes article on the Loudness War is called and no one has presented any reason for changing this name other than, "It's got that damn anime in it." despite the fact that no one who didn't know would know, if we didn't tell them.

So we've got a reference that's amusing to a very few, and completely ignorable by everyone else. What's the benefit in changing it? Other than confusing near 800 people and lowering the wiki's stability and reliability as a resource to play Musical Trope Names because lolanime, that is?

Creed of the Happy Pessimist:Always expect the worst. Then, when it happens, it was only what you expected. All else is a happy surprise.
