Two Girls and a Guy.

This was in the Trope Repair shop awhile back, and was never resolved.

This isn't the opposite of Two Guys And A Girl (which might need a rename itself, a work shares the same name) but rather a specific instance of the Three Amigos that takes place in old-school JRP Gs. And looking at the wicks, it is very easy to confuse this as a version of the Three Amigos.

Possible renames that were suggested in the old thread were "With a Friend and a Stranger" which works much better.

If you can, please make the trope name in the title a Wiki Word. Inserting spaces breaks the link.

Bad snowclone, but looks rather specific to come up with a punchy enough name. Archie Power Trio? (Because, even if romance isn't involved, the group could be seen to consist of Archie, Betty and Veronica? I got nothin'.)

This isn't the opposite of Two Guys And A Girl (which might need a rename itself, a work shares the same name)

During YKTTW, I brought this up and Seth noted that the show was also known as Two Guys A Girl And A Pizza Place. That might be rather long, but these situations are what we have the Series/ namespace for.

This was agreed to be renamed to With a Friend and a Stranger, and broadened so that it covers that dynamic. Essentially, it makes for easier storytelling since you have a limited number of characters, two of which have an established bond and one new bond to explore and help drive the story.

I'm not sure why you didn't just do it then.

...I don't remember with a consensus was reached in the last thread and I was a bit new to the troping thing. I guess i could rename it now...

  • shrug* The two-guys-and-a-girl gender dynamic is a common, separate thing too, though I can see if someone thought it was People Sit On Chairs.

okay, if a consenus was reached then whenever I get the time, I'm moving everything to With a Friend and a Stranger and doing a YKTTW for the new descrip of Two Girls and a Guy and when it gets enough response/examples, moving that to the new space.

Thoughts?

Here's a possible write-up based on what I remember from the previous TRS thread:

When introducing characters, you want to keep the overall number of relationships and names to remember to a minimum. This is why many media start off with only a handful of primary characters, often three. There are many common "stock" variations on the genders and relationships of these few characters.

One of them is the friend and stranger dynamic. The protagonist will have a best friend, often a childhood friend. This dynamic is easy to show in the limited time you have to hook your audience, and easy to add depth to at a later time. The third character will be a stranger to the protagonist and his friend. His or her appearance will often serve to drive the plot, and his unfamiliarity with the characters and location allows for Exposition.

Tropes that may play out in these scenarios when both the friend and stranger are female include both Victorious and Unlucky Childhood Friend, First Girl Wins, and The Dulcinea Effect.

In Eastern RPGs, this dynamic almost always appears as a (male) hero, his childhood friend (usually female), and a girl from nowhere (almost always female and a Mysterious Waif).

If you don't have time to YKTTW it, I could do it. I'm about to launch the only YKTTW I'm tending, anyway.
