I'm sorry, it's just (incoming OPINION): Amber's like the only character in this strip that I actually like, and she's not a character anymore. Basically just a means for this strip to become "It's Ruby!" in all but name.

The falling out with Amber happened years ago, back during their (or at least Amber's) adolescence, i.e. at a time when it's unlikely that Amber's male partner(s) had finished growing in that department (among other things).

Yaoi is pretty much entirely Barbie Doll Anatomy, no? Like, I would be SHOCKED if she saw anything especially explicit there.

Yes, there was a bonus strip playing off the Barbie Doll effect. And I’m not familiar with yaoi, so I wouldn’t know how much it could teach a girl about male anatomy.

And yes, Ruby has seen some of Amber’s porn work — once, when she was fourteen, at a teenage party. They’re different enough in age that this was adult porn featuring an adult Amber with, no doubt, adult male partners. But the experience was traumatic for her and led to their relationship being messed up for the next seven years, so I doubt that she wants to think about that as a reference, or that she’s ever gone looking for more.

But it’s not the only time she’s seen male bits, and she seems to have a working understanding of what they look like and how they’re meant to work, so she’s being written as a woman who lives in the modern world (and probably paid proper if uncomfortable attention during sex ed lessons in school), rather than as an implausible comedy innocent.

As to Ruby taking over the comic — well, Giz said she created it because she wanted to do more with Dillon. But Dillon is a shallow nitwit, so I’m not surprised that she never found much to do with him as a character. Amber might have had more potential — the whole “retired porn star trying to negotiate ordinary relationships” plot could’ve gone somewhere — but for some reason, that all got rather short-circuited, and Amber ended up being written as a bit clueless in her (lack of) efforts to resolve the problems with Ruby. But Ruby turned out to have some spark, intelligence, and a plot arc, so it wasn’t too surprising that she took over.

Not desensitised; she’s saying that she’d previously masturbated and she was, quite simply, stretched and accustomed to penetration, with any potentially problematic hymen out of the way.

Tearing on the first time is mostly due to inexperienced or clueless people doing it wrong anyway.

Or the hymen itself being of the kind that covers too much of the passage to avoid tearing it during penetration... which, of course, assumes that it's not also of the kind that is so resilient that trying to tear it will end up just causing pain to the woman and requires artificial removal.

If it weren't for the comic ending, Ruby getting her own love egg could've been its own plot. As it is… well, it works, but it's a lot of off-screen character development.

Did we even know her feelings on masturbation prior to this?

Apart from reacting with horror when she discovered she was holding Amber's toy — which appeared to be just a matter of ordinary fastidiousness (which she does have in large doses) — not really. I always assumed that she accepted it was something that happened, but that she didn't want to talk about much, and if she did it herself, she didn't think about it the rest of the time if she could help it. It would be entirely in keeping if she's got a little more accepting of the idea recently, while still not wanting to talk about it casually.
