Copying over what I posted in Chatterbox:
Not too amused by the dynamic between Kujo and Victorique, it seems like another nice guy gets whipped by intelligent, attractive, snarky girl type of thing. I think it was supposed to be funny, but I didn't laugh once. I guess Grevil was kind of funny in how flamboyant he was, but eh.
I would rather they focus more on the mystery aspect, but there really wasn't much of one this episode, although it looks like the arc isn't over yet. I'm hoping that it will get more of a mystery pacing later on, since the character dynamic isn't pulling me in much.
Basically the only thing I undoubtedly like is the time period. That's really not enough to keep me watching, but I think I will at least try to finish the first arc.
One thing that kinda bothered me was how easy the mystery was. At first, I figured it out halfway through the story at "the maid got the gun from the next room blah blah blah," and thought that maybe I just had a lucky guess, but it seems that everybody on /a/ got it too. As one anon pointed out, however, we have the who and how dunit, but not the whydunit. The last one's gotta be the biggest part of the mystery, given the pretty easy first two.

Whatcha gonna do, little buckaroo? | i be pimpin' madoka ficsI think you meant we already know who and how. It's the motive that still evades us.
Gah. Yeah, you're right.
Whatcha gonna do, little buckaroo? | i be pimpin' madoka ficsI didn't figure out the arabic speaking part, I thought it was just a freak accident, like with the first hypothesis of Suzumiya Haruhi's mystery island episode.

For the Arabic thing, I thought that they were going to say that the maid placed a death curse upon her in Arabic, but no one knew about the curse since they didn't speak the same language.
I didn't know that bullets could pass through door locks, so the solution never passed my mind. I did facepalm when the maid shot the lock off, though, since that sort of thing really bugs me after reading the The Coconut Effect page.

Tumblr here.^Yeah, me too. I hope all the mysteries aren't this easy.
I actually quite enjoyed the first episode, though. Grevil's hair makes for a pretty entertaining Inspector Lestrade sort of character, and even though the basic dynamic between Kujo and Vitorique is nothing new, I liked it and I thought that there was something new about the way they did it. At the very least, I'm glad that even though Victorique is fairly rude to Kujo, she's not nearly as openly abusive as a lot of female leads have been to male leads in anime recently. I totally thought that she was going to start hitting him when he went through her stuff, for instance, and I'm glad she didn't. I'm also glad that he actually did seem to get her to carry less stuff. It would be impossible in a lot of other anime for a guy in that situation to have any sort of victory.
Also, yeah. I thought the setting was really cool too. BONES is good at early-20th-century European atmosphere, as anyone who's seen Fullmetal Alchemist can attest.
Always, somewhere, someone is fighting for you. As long as you remember them, you are not alone.Pretty much what everyone else has been saying; I like the art, found the character interactions mildly irritating, and hope the next mysteries aren't so easy
So it's Zero No Tsukaima without the magic? I might check it out...
There probably won't be any Fish out of Water gags like Zn T had with Saito though.
"Every opinion that isn't mine is subjected to Your Mileage May Vary."^ But like others said, Victorique is way less abusive than Louise.
Tumblr here.A pity.
Unlike some people who edited Abuse Is Okay When It Is Female on Male and Abandon Ship, I actually found their relationship entertaining...

Always, somewhere, someone is fighting for you. As long as you remember them, you are not alone.yay me ('-'d)
"Every opinion that isn't mine is subjected to Your Mileage May Vary."I thought the one moment/dynamic that made Zn T watchable was when Louise (who's been using her social status to push pretty much everyone else, and especially her rivals, around) thinks the princess and Saiji has something going on, and totally freaks out.
Because she can't pull rank there. That would have been interesting. Pity they never did much with it.
"No, the Singularity will not happen. Computation is hard." -Happy EntOh, I also liked the OP a lot. The song was good and the animation was fantastic. The visuals were above-average even for a BONES OP.

DAT HAIR
(Seriously, he could compete with Marge Simpson.)
It kind of reminds me of that one gangster guy in Durarara...the boyfriend of the chick who had her cellphone stomped on.
Tumblr here.^ Yo! Yo yo! HEY MAN!
Seriously though, this show's fairly interesting so far. I'll give episodea 2 and 3 a watch; we'll see if it improves. It's not bad by any stretch; just fairly generic so far. I feel like things'll get more interesting once we find out who the hell Victorique is. Though I have to say, boarding a ghost ship is one of the best ways they could've salvaged my flagging interest at the end there.
It's been fun.I can never get over to how japanese people "looking like a doll" is a compliment rather than a hideous insult.
"No, the Singularity will not happen. Computation is hard." -Happy EntWell, dolls are cute. And maybe kinda creepy, but that's another issue entirely.
The talk about the guy's hair is pretty funny. I have to say, as soon as I saw his hairstyle, my mind immediately jumped to 'ATTENTION DUELISTS! MY HAIR IS ASSAULTING YOU!'
Always, somewhere, someone is fighting for you. As long as you remember them, you are not alone.^ Thanks alot. Now everytime I see Grevil I'm gonna think right back to Yugioh!
#IceBearForPresident"Queen Beryl"? Was that a blatant Sailor Moon Shout-Out, or was there something else to it?
So ummm...is the main character(Kazuya) supposed to be japanese?...and is his hair supposed to be black?
Because it looks brown to me...a dark shade of brown, but definately not black...

Thoughts on the first episode: you put a detective on a train to a cruise. Are you trying to breed serial killers?
That aside, it seems to be fairly generic yet still entertaining detective material.
