The one thing that has always bugged me: Most people wouldn't say "good/bad angel", but "angel/devil". Yes, according to The Bible, devils are fallen angels, but still. And the title doesn't say that they usually sit on the shoulders.

Shoulder Angel And Devil?

Actually, according to the Bible, Lucifer himself- oh, right.

Anyway. The current name is derived from Good Cop/Bad Cop, and I personally think it's fine - I immediately knew what it was referring to the first time I saw it. I don't see Shoulder Angel And Demon as any better, because I generally think of the angel and demon floating on either side of the head rather than sitting on shoulders. Maybe it could just be added as a redirect, though?

I disagree, "fallen angel" isa pretty popular term referring to demons, and it's almost the same as "bad angel".

found in: 254 articles, excluding discussions.

This title has brought 1,174 people to the wiki from non-search engine links since 20th FEB '09.

Is this worth it? I'd personally prefer Shoulder Angels.

Shoulder Angels is also decent, but the current name seems perfectly clear to me. What's it going to be mistaken for, angels playing good cop bad cop? Our Angels Are Different?

Actually the technical term for these is demons/daemons and then because demons was used for these, it got used for the other thing we regard as demons and...yeah it doesn't really matter. I'd prefer Shoulder Demons but it's not worth it and the current name is fine and has a few other points more in its favour.

Actually since we have the thread open, I'm going to suggest changing the Shoulder Angels redirect to the singular (yeah, and I'm saying this right after making the plural Shoulder Demons a redirect. D'oh). I can imagine people using Shoulder Angel or Shoulder Demon to refer to a singular one elsewhere in the wiki. I think htere are cases where you would want to do that. Maybe only one turns up in the scene that you are going to write about, you want to describe what they say, maybe a work just uses one but it's a reference to this trope.

I don't understand the use of plural redirects for Wiki Words whose plural can be obtained like this:

{{Shoulder Angel}}s -> Shoulder Angels.

I'm not sure how many people know you can even do that. If anything, I see the format of [[ShoulderAngels Shoulder Angel]]

The current set up is fine, and perfectly clear.

Yes, in general I would agree that trope names should be singular, but this is a case of something that is always plural.

If it were to be renamed, I'd prefer a reference to shoulders be in the new title, but I honestly think this one is fine.

The name "bad angels" immediately conjured the thought of regular angels that happen to be malicious, or at least uncaring, in sort of a God Is Evil sense. I think using one of the shoulder oriented names would make it a lot more clear as to what this is about.

Please read the Trope Renaming Guidelines, I don't see a good reason to change this title.

We've all seen the guidelines (or at least, I like to think we have). I wasn't saying there was a specific need to change it, just that I didn't find it especially clear.

This thread is explicitly about renaming, and no valid reasons to rename have been presented.

Well I think the OP was getting at its coherence value. It's not something I find to be a strong enough point that I'd want to argue it, though, even if I kind of see the point.

I always thought the name was perfectly clear (and I didn't even make the mental connect to Good Cop/Bad Cop).

The one I usually hear in daily speech is Good Conscience Bad Conscience, which would probably be even clearer. But I'm not really invested in changing the name, like I said.

Another name for this is Shoulder Sprites.

Yes, it is not always an angel and a devil, but that is common shorthand for "good" and "bad". Shoulder Angels and etc are fine.

That's strange, because most of the time I read about one shoulder angel and one shoulder devil...

I'm thinking Shoulder Sprites, really. Removes the little "angel/devil" argument and stays concise.

It would need quite a bit of help cleaning the wicks, though.

shoulder sprites makes it sound like some eighties computer game. There has been no misue or confusion with the original trope name. The OP would have been better off putting this on a IJBM page than TRS.
