I always thought that was the reason, though it doesn't explain why Ultimate lists six other characters that were added to the game after him, four of which have bigger roles in the story than he does.

It's because Ultimate goes by reveal order, or as close to it as possible; hidden characters subsequently are listed by their in-game unlock order instead.

So even if Sonic was a late inclusion for Brawl, he was officially revealed on Dojo prior to King Dedede and Olimar's reveal posts. Then past them you have Lucario, R.O.B, Toon Link, and Wolf all being that game's hidden newcomers, so they're listed at the end.

For something similar, the order for Wii U/3DS has Robin and Duck Hunt both listed further along in accordance with their reveal trailers. This is despite them probably being some of the first newcomers that were developed for the game, since them (and Rosalina & Luma) were the main three newcomers proposed in the project pitch to Nintendo.

Ah, okay. Brawl came out long before I followed anything like that, so I didn't realize.

Something similar happened in Melee with Mr. Game & Watch. He's invariably your last character, but the game orders the clones last (see the Kirby Hat #5 trophy, the list of Smash trophies, and All-Star Match Deluxe), so Roy is nominally the last character. That's why Ultimate lists him after Chrom (who's Roy's echo).

It still doesn't make sense to me why Sheik is listed before Zelda but in Melee only Zelda was on the CSS screen and you had to use her down special to become Sheik.

Going by the opening scene of Melee, we first see Sheik playing the harp and then the silhouette of Zelda in the sky's background. This scene was also the reveal trailer of the game, I think.,

That still really bothers me. That's the only major gripe about the numbering order. Because in Melee and Brawl, you start out with Zelda, then you can play with Sheik with the down b input. The Legend of Zelda literally has her name in it, so make her first and then Sheik!

Also, is anyone else bummed that Ultimate never did an 'Echo Fighters' DLC pack?

The ordering for the original 8 is based off of their character snippets in the opening to Smaah 64 for instance. And then they continued that character numbering for Ultimate based on when the character was shown in the opening or revealed throughout development (and in the game where they are playable as Wolf was shown nonplayable in Melee but gets his Brawl number instead). So the Sheik Zelda order was because we see Sheik first in the opening then Zelda a couple seconds later. Very odd thing for them to adhere to so strongly in that instance, though. But hey, that also means that the second Zelda character added was technically a one-off character, and the world didn't end.

But yea, their character confirmation in development and their official reveal don't always make sense. Duck Hunt was one of the first characters picked in development but one of the last characters shown publicly. In that case, it was weird how leaks DIDN'T have them.

Mea culpa. I took another look at the numbered character list in Ultimate, and it turns out Mr. Game & Watch is listed after Chrom (and thus also after Roy), not before. So that's one thing the game retconned since Melee always nominally listed Roy as the last character.

This might be untrue, but I read once that Zelda being playable was a later decision for Melee, and that originally only Sheik would be playable. In the version of the intro that was used at Melee's E3 reveal, Sheik has gameplay shots in place of where Zelda does in the final version. Then again, Zelda still has her appearances in the rendered sections of the opening.

Fun takeaways: one guy knew the Ice Climbers immediately, another excited for Ness, the room goes crazy for Ridley.

"Ridley is playable,right?"

"Sadly no,he's too big and purple for the gamecube!"

Yeah iirc Sheik was revealed first and had no gameplay trailer early on.

"Are we getting Ridley playable?"

"YES! Playable Ridley!.............in 20 years."

At least he became playable eventually. Samuarai Goroh's been stuck as an Assist Trophy since Brawl.

I wonder how many people thought that Wolf was playable in Melee

I've never been good at speculation, a few years ago I once said that there was no way Banjo & Kazooie, Steve or Sora would ever get in.

Then of course, they got in.

Egg on my face, decided I was done with speculation as I decided I'll just be wrong every time and get laughed at.

maybe you could use it to your advantage, start predicting that things you want to happen won't happen.

Okay, how about...the next Smash game isn't in development and it won't come with a story mode.

At least half of this will be right either way.

I will always love that they animated Steve like in Minecraft instead of something like Minecraft Story Mode.

I remember a time when a ton of people drew Steve as a grotesquely ugly man. That was weird.

I just hate Steve's beard since I can never unsee it as a creepy smile.

is insane how every stage had to be reprogramed to keep into account which kind of material could steve mine from every spot from each stage, it's a crazy level of attention to detail.

I just love how perfect that meme with the picture of Sponge Bob’s parents fit in regards to Steve’s reveal.

If any of you have (like me) missed at least one of the last four Spirit Events, have the Spirits you missed come back up on the Spirit Board for you yet? Because I still have no such luck.
