Not really a new VN, and sorry if its been mentioned, but i just found out there is an english patch being made available for both the PC and PS 3 version of Soni Comi, its already partially done according to the site. https://sonicomiproject.wordpress.com/

Edit, pretty sure all images would be considered sfw on that site, although guess i should warn the background image is of the heroine in a bikini if that is a problem for some.

Can anyone please provide a good, trustworthy, and detailed summary of what changes were made to If My Heart Had Wings for its English localization, and what — if any — issues affect it?

I remember I've had it on my radar for a while, but I'm also aware that there seems to be a controversy over its translation/localization, complete with accusations of "censorship".

The sex scenes were edited out and some of the more risque humor to go with it. This left Ageha's route a mess because she and the protagonist start off as sex friends. A restoration patch was made to fix it.

So, i've recently played True Love an' Heartache 101, an' i reall wanted to play other Visual Novels/Dating Sim in the same vein. Any suggestions?

It doesn't need to be an Eroge, i don't really mind.

I'm not creative enough to come up with a signature line yet.

If you're still looking, Porcelana Man 616...

  • Shira Oka Second Chances is a simulation game with a decent amount of story. It's currently being sold through Gamersgate and the Mac App Store.
  • Roommates is another indie game which mixes simulation gameplay and narrative. It's being sold through the creator's site and through Steam.
  • The first Nintendo DS version of Love Plus has a fan translation. Keep in mind that you will need to use emulation in order to get it to work.
  • So does the PC-FX version of Welcome to Pia Carrot. It has a modest amount of adult content.

I'm looking for a good visual novel. I don't really have a lot of specification. I just want a visual novel that is:

1) Tense

2) Has a good mystery/mind screw

3) Not a VN I've played before

I've played 999, VLR, F/SN, all of the ace attorney games, Stein's;Gate, Dangan Ronpa 1 and 2, Ever 17, and Remember 11.

Also note that I'm holding off on the When they Cry games until the Steam retranslation comes out.

G Senjou no Maou or Rewrite would probably be my top recommendations though I'm not sure how much mystery there is. Input Output was also fairly good and has what you're looking for. Never7 is okay, I guess.

OK, thanks for the recommendations! Speaking of I/O, I had started it, but burned out from V Ns just as I was starting it. I don't want to look up summaries of route A for fear of spoilers. I had finished A and only just barely started B. Do you know any place that would simply summarize route A without any spoilers outside of that?

I wrote a summary up, but on second thought I deleted it. I can tell you who Hinata meets or how he relates to them but that's not going to mean anything without reading it. Plus, route A is one of the two introductory routes and definitely shouldn't be skipped.

OK then, I guess I just replay route A again to jog my memory. Thanks for the reply!

Guys, what's good on Steam Sale right now? I've finished Fate Stay Night and Katawa Shoujo, and wanted to get started on novels I'd actually pay for. Hatoful Boyfriend sounds pretty awesome, any other recs?

If My Heart Had Wings is alright. People say Planetarian is good, but I haven't read it myself. I only recognize a few others such as Dengeki Stryker, but that one's pretty mediocre.

Steins Gate is probably the best Visual Novel with an official release, but it's not on Steam and it's probably significantly more expensive.

I think Steins;Gate was about $30. Whether or not any of the sites selling it have put it on special though, I don't know.

To add to this, some western V Ns you can get on Steam:

Long Live the Queen (developed by Hanako Games) is a fantastic hybrid between a raising sim and a VN. The game is short, but there is a ton of replayability and tons of things to uncover in multiple playthroughs. The game is fantastic when you attempt to discover just how many things the game can show depending on your choices. After over 60 hours, I still haven't seen all that the game has to offer. Just keep in mind that it is short, and that to truly enjoy the game you are going to need to try to uncover everything.

Dysfunctional Systems episode 1 was pretty good, but short with only 1 real choice that mattered. However, the artwork and music are fantastic and alone make the episode fantastic. Episode 0 should be coming out in January, with episode 2 coming out some point in the future. Keep in mind that there is a different artist after episode 1, which is disappointing.

Magical Diary (also developed by Hanako) is a kind of a "totally not Harry Potter" VN/sim thing. Disculding the art style, it is pretty good. There isn't really much I can really say about it. Only pick it up on sale, because $15 is way too much. The current $7.50 is probably worth it. Like L Lt Q, this is only worth it if you plan on making multiple playthroughs, as one playthrough is only a few hours. This game is a more traditional VN than L Lt Q, despite having the magic sim/RPG elements. There are definitely some set paths, with good endings and bad endings.

For western V Ns you can't get on Steam:

The Royal Trap can only be gotten on Hanako's website. It is a traditional VN (unlike the Hanko hybrids above). It has an interesting mystery, tense moments, and good music. I wouldn't say the The Royal Trap is a fantastic game. However, it is a good one.

I've tried Hatoful Boyfriend, Sakura Spirit, and Gemini Rue.

They're cool.

They're okay.

I can't find anything near the level of Fate Stay Night.

Which is kind of what I'm looking for in Visual Novels.

Sort of how I hung out in the Anime/Manga scene after my teenaged years because I wanted to find something that would give me the kind of thrill Neon Genesis Evangelion gave. Took me a while, too. Both authors that can do this for me have names that start with Uro-. Oh, and whoever wrote Code Geass, but that show has very little retrospective value, because massive Fridge Logic problems.

Hey guys, I went to my local library about yesterday and found a unusual Visual Novel called Manga Man. It's where a Manga character from another dimension, falls into a rip in space-time and ends up in our own reality.

Now he has to try and fit in, while having to deal with the difficulties of his abilities and life.

I wouldn't mind someone doing a tropes page on Manga Man. -Time Travelinc.

Time Travelinc, the work of fiction that you mentioned is a comic. (You can use terms like graphic novel, Alternative Comics, or Sequential Art if you like.) I've seen it in retail stores as a paper book, and it combines words and pictures. Manga Man was created by Colleen Doran and Barry Lyga. The story appears to be about a character who's a Refugee from TV Land.

Can somebody recommend me a VN with a plot that's at least decent with hardcore H scenes? Unlike most people, I enjoy the average VN's porn scenes; I don't skip them.

Arha Since: Jan, 2010

Are you looking for well written H scenes? You didn't actually ask for that, but it really narrows down the possible choices.

Well, anyway, but Sharin no Kuni and G Senjou no Maou both have a fair amount of sex in them. They're very good. Grisaia no Kajitsu is also pretty good. Something like Majikoi would have more sex scenes and long ones at that, but isn't quite as good.

And I guess this would be a bad time to mention Sengoku Rance. Unless you're into that kind of thing, I guess. Fun game though.

Hey, I kinda liked Sengoku Rance! Hated the rape scenes, though. What's with Japanese pornography and rape?

Have you played the other games in the series? I've seen LPs of them, and they looked OK expect for, of course, the icky rape parts.

I tried playing an earlier one but it sucked. Big Bang Age was alright though. Less rape, anyway.

Strawberry Vinegar is an enjoyable OELVN for those who are looking for slice-of-life/fluffy stories and/or yuri. Fair warning: do not read while hungry.

In case anyone hasn't played it yet, her tears were my light is a great yuri VN with unusual game mechanics that involve time travel. NomnomNami's other games are really good too. So far, all of her games are free.
