This may be just a British thing, but I find it hilarious that the one RL president the Doctor has met on-screen in any serious scenario is Richard Nixon. Also, President Winters is given so little respect that despite being president-elect in 2008, it's the Democratic Obama who's president in canon in 2009(Winters died before the Paradox Machine was active so he's Killed Off for Real). Good thing for the Toclafane he probably won't contribute to the gene pool at thid point and didn't cause any of them to pop out of existence. Although it raises the question-was Obama the VP-elect and Winters was a Democrat, or does Russel just not know what the president-elect was and Winters is supposed to be president over George W Bush. I'm assuming the latter

I’m still baffled as to how he came across the term while apparently having no idea what it actually means. Perhaps I’m being unfair, but while he’s more that free to criticize our foreign policy, I’d appreciate it if he didn’t at the same time get basic facts wrong.

(And also having the President’s opponent be the Master. Like, maybe he’s a jerk, but you’re well within your rights to be a jerk to the Master, particularly this incarnation.)

...But maybe I’m just being petty.

It's happened before, the 7th Doctor called himself President elect too at one point.

Though considering the Time Lords appointed him and he bolted as they said it, without using the office, he might have a case there?

I think it's just that it's a longer title so they think it sounds more important. Basically the scene in The Simpsons where Homer makes his own company then makes himself Vice President. Then corrects himself to Junior Vice President.

Wondering why they don't just keep the current presidents fictional if mentioned. I think they only avoided making Dubya president so they can avoid backlash by offing him while still giving such a glaring Take That!.

[up][up][up][up]I am going to go with a much simpler explanation.... That episode aired in June 2007. Roughly a year before it would have been possible to even know who the candidates would be, let alone which would win.

Jodie's song for Children In Need, a cover of Coldplay's 'Yellow' is doing the 'rounds on Youtube, Spotify, and other platforms. It's been very clearly autotuned.

A faithful recreation of a missing classic who episode. This one apparently was the introduction to 'The Daleks' Master Plan'. I've not seen the classic serial, or this recreation but I am planning to, once I get around to it.

DO NOT let the thumbnail fool you. It is in black and white. Actually, I am not sure if it is a after effect or if they really filmed with old cameras.

The black-and-white conversion was done in editing, but the production design (colors on props, costumes, etc) was done to make sure it looked good that way.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

So clearly autotuned that I didn't notice any autotuning.

Ooo, I really like the redesign!

Well, series 12 looks like it's going to be packed with returning monsters then.

I wonder how that'll play with 13's aloof nature. It'll be interesting to see if she's so hands off when her greatest foes are afoot.

She already faced one Dalek in "Resolution" and was quite hands-on.

I also think that Series 12 is going to be quite interesting. I really liked all of the characters in Series 11, but the bad guys were lacking. So bringing back more classic bad guys might help with that. Plus, they might have had more time to iron out all of the kinks — some of the Series 11 episodes seemed like they needed one more draft before they would have been really good (cough "Kablam" cough).

Honestly, I wouldn't mind if they chucked the Doctor's whole Rogues Gallery out the nearest window. To me, Doctor Who should be about doing things it hasn't done before. And bringing back old enemies runs counter to that. Sometimes they can think of something new to do with them, but more often than not it's the same-old same-old, and their episodes tend to range from mediocre to awful as a result.

I like Doctor Who best when it's creating mythology. You can do that with recurring monsters if you're willing to actually do somehhing new with them.

Dark Water and Death on Heaven is a great example for both the Cybermen and the Master. Heck World Enough And Time and The Doctor Falls are too.

Isue is, it's always the same monsters. It's difficult to create mythology is no future writer is ever going to reference you because they're busy referencing the 70s.

I'm actually pretty hyped for the Judoon because they're so one note at the moment you can't help but build in them.

There's always utilizing the forgotten monsters of Classic Who to shake things up.

I'm ready for the dense mythology of the Nimons

The eighties are surpringky barren of recurring monsters and foes. The revival series has not mined that era so much.

Wackd Since: May, 2009

I mean, the eighties did spend most of their time plundering from the sixties and seventies, so. And when it wasn't doing that, it was doing SpaceGods mostly, who tend not to be recurring concerns.

Plus Gus from "Mummy on the Orient Express" is obviously genderswapped Rani

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

I agree that Doctor Who should be carving out some more of an original identity at times instead of relying on classic monsters all the time. Even an episode that misses can be interesting if it's taking a new approach, as opposed to another classic monster episode where The Doctor says their name. Though frankly, I think that's mostly coming from my dissatisfaction with a lot of Moffat's work.

But saying that - Series 11 went out of its way to shake up the status quo and focus on telling new stories. It was hit and miss, and people wanted the old monsters back. Now we're getting a taste of the old monsters again, the zeitgeist has shifted to say that Doctor Who is best when blazing new trails. I agree with both sides to an extent, leaning more to the latter because after binging Doctor Who last week I've seen so many classic monster episodes, but still.

I'm expecting something in the ballpark of half-and-half. Half of the next season, or less, made up of returning monsters, and half focusing on new standalone episodes. If they revisit series 11 stuff, I hope they revisit Kablam in a darker light, and I hope they shed more light on the Stenza. Also, I'm rather partial to the Pting, so I hope it gets a little cameo.
