- Franchise Original Sin: A common criticism of this crossover is that the One-Armed Swordsman's presence breaks Suspension of Disbelief as his Super-Strength and Flight clashes with the realistic jidaigeki setting of Zatoichi. This is because Kang originates from a more fantastical wuxia setting where every martial-artist can develop superhuman abilities through training, so the crossover's accurate depiction of Kang's powers would naturally alienate viewers used to the more grounded fights in Zatoichi. On that note, Ichi himself isn't exactly a realistic depiction of a Blind Weaponmaster as he regularly performs superhuman feats comparable to Kang's, such as chopping down a tree in one slice in the previous movie Zatoichi Goes To The Fire Festival or slaughtering militias of trained samurai without breaking a sweat, but again, none of them are as blatantly supernatural as Kang's high jumps and flight.
- Hilarious in Hindsight: Jimmy Wang Yu would fight another Blind Weaponmaster in Master of the Flying Guillotine, this time as the One-Armed Boxer.
