YMMV / What Richard Did

Go To

  • Critical Dissonance: The movie has a 93% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 61% audience score.
  • Fridge Horror: Peter is implied to suffer from depression, and the funeral scene shows him in tears over his guilt. He may be headed for a major depressive episode after the film concludes.
  • Genius Bonus: The film plays with traditional tropes and iconography associated with 18th-20th century Irish nationalism in ways that wouldn't be obvious to an outside audience, such as Conor's singing of an aisling poem, his and Richard's ethnic heritages, the rural/urban divide enacted in their rivalry, Lara's appearance mirroring traditional personifications of Ireland, etc., and places them in the updated context of The Celtic Tiger as a way of critiquing the politics of the time.
  • Hype Backlash: Inevitably, many didn't find the film to be as good as critics said. Jack Reynor in particular is hugely divisive when it comes to his performance - and this only intensified after his panned turn in Transformers: Age of Extinction. It wasn't until A Royal Night Out and Macbeth that he started to win people over.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Peter Coonan of Love/Hate appears in a speaking role at the house party.
  • Slow-Paced Beginning: Deliberately done to establish the social world of the characters, with the title chosen to set up a sense of expectation and allow the film to take its time in the first half.
