YMMV / Vineland

Go To

  • Critical Backlash: Vineland turns out to be a much better book than V., The Crying of Lot 49, and, yes, even Gravity's Rainbow. At least according to some fans.
  • Misaimed Fandom: Many readers downplayed the book as a lighthearted, goofy comedy when the overall tone and mood of the book is quite bleak and depressing.
  • Tear Jerker: You’d be surprised that Vineland evokes raw emotional responses that was absent in his earlier work. Most of the characters, including Brock Vond, was sympathetic and human.
  • Tough Act to Follow: Thirty years later, Vineland is still dismissed, downplayed and disliked by readers, mainly because the book came out seventeen years after the groundbreaking Gravity’s Rainbow. To add more salts to the wound, many fans still prefer The Crying of Lot 49, Inherent Vice and Bleeding Edge over Vineland.
