YMMV / Total Drama All-Stars Rewrite

Go To

  • Broken Base:
    • The readers were split on how "Sundae Muddy Sundae" (widely considered to be one of, if not the worst episode of the show) went mostly unchanged. Some felt it was fine, considering that Courtney returned for the finale where she and Gwen properly made up for everything that went down and what was changed was enough to make it easier to swallow. Others say that it should have been changed further and should have removed the chart, even going on to accuse the authors (one of whom admits to strongly hating Courtney) of being too biased in their hatred of her.
    • The author's treatment of Cody similarly split readers. Some were fine with it, pointing out that nothing Cody did in canon contradicted anything he does or says here, with even things like the reveal that he only hooked up Gwen and Trent in hopes of making Gwen like him more or the reveal he stole Gwen's bra still being possible. Others hated it, pointing out that they took someone who canon has shown to be a somewhat perverted, but still overall Nice Guy and made him just as bad, if not worse, than Sierra, his canonical stalker. A third camp takes a more neutral view, saying that while they don't especially like Cody's portrayal, it doesn't have much of an effect on the overall story, so they could simply live with it.
  • Catharsis Factor: After going through four seasons of being humiliated, hated for something she didn't have much fault in, and overall just being treated horribly, Gwen not only wins the season, but is the official winner.
  • Crack Pairing: Noah/Dawn. Surprisingly, it works.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Noah and Dawn's shared status as such for their respective generations of contestants is why Chris brought them back for the season and why they are such Breakout Characters in the fic.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • In "No Eggspects the Spanish Opposition" Owen dresses up as a bear in order to take something from it, only for it to backfire when the bear takes a liking to him. This concept gets used with komodo dragons instead of bears in The Ridonculous Race, nearly a year after the chapter's release.
    • One of the major changes made was that the finale had three people competing. The second reboot season would ultimately have a three person finale.
    • In the third episode, Owen mentioned he had "drain bamage". MK would say that exact line in canon in the second season of the reboot.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Mal crosses it when he brutally beats Owen with a paddle, and threatens more harm onto him if he reveals his true nature to the others.
  • Retroactive Recognition: The fic's authors would later become far better known for their work in the MLP Analysis community as Jasper Pie and Harmony Dancer.
  • Take That, Scrappy!:
    • On seperate occasions, both Noah and Anne Maria talk about how boring Mike is without his alternate personalities, reflecting how many fans view Mike as a Flat Character without many traits beyond being a Nice Guy with a mental disorder.
    • During The Final Wreck-Ening, after Mal officially reveals himself to Zoey and Gwen, Gwen laughs in his face while mocking him for being such a cheesy villain.
    • Leonard the LARPer was one of the most hated characters, if not the most hated character, in the "Pahkitew Island" season. When he establishes himself to the wedding guests, everyone, including Harold, Noah, Sierra, and Sam, makes it clear they hate him. He also gets his wizard wand broken by Gwen.
    • The Pahkitew Island cast is generally considered to be the worst in Total Drama history, largely due to being unrealistic. This is lampshaded by Chef in the epilogue:note
Chef: [Chris] just picked the 14 audition tapes that DIDN'T crash and fall down on the floor.
  • Tear Jerker: The sense of finality the end of My Big Fat Total Drama All-Stars Wedding gives with the first and second generation contestants has been praised by many as being the perfectly beautiful and emotional sendoff for the contestants that the series ultimately never gave its viewers.
