YMMV / Tom and Jerry: A Nutcracker Tale

Go To

  • Accidental Nightmare Fuel: Tom's mangled look after being put through a shredder is quite disturbing.
    • The faces Tom makes after getting mashed between roller coaster cars are also pretty gruesome
  • Awesome Art: Even people who don't like this movie admit the animation is pretty nice.
  • Awesome Music: The movie actually keeps the music of The Nutcracker and manages to make it fit well with the action of the cartoon.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment:
    • While searching for the Toymaker, Jerry's group end up in a cavern with dozens of dragons whom have rattlesnake tails and are lead by a fire fairy made by one of said dragons during it's sleep to find Paulie's head after it ended up inside the cavern by mistake. The group then leave after Jerry charms an awakened dragons with a flute he pulls out of nowhere and it is never acknowledged afterwards.
    • While Tom and his troop begin their march to find Jerry and his allies, they go through a town full of other cats watching and cheering them on with other wildlife around such as chickens, all of whom were never established to be there while Jerry and Nibbles were enjoying their time with the toys nor arriving afterwards and are nowhere to be seen afterwards, not even after Jerry and the toys send Tom and the rest of the cats packing.
  • Franchise Original Sin: This was the first film in the DTV series to be adapted from a classic story. At the time, it was largely ignored as this film still had a measure of originality, while later films are nearly identical to the story (or, in some cases, film) its based off of. It also helps that Tom and Jerry are in the spotlight throughout this film, while later films have them reduced to supporting protagonists.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Dr. Malevolent, a green Palette Swap of Tom with an evil doctor get-up appears out of nowhere to help the Cat Guard interrogate Nelly to discover where Jerry and friends are heading, somehow making her tell them simply by pulling her string with his pliers. Afterwards, he is never seen again with the only explanation that he was there and did this being to get a paycheck.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: Generally agreed upon as one of the better Tom and Jerry Direct to Video films. It helps that it features both Tom and Jerry center stage, instead of just having them tag along on someone else's adventure.
  • Tear Jerker: Nelly's Disney Death near the film's ending. The reaction her friends make when they see this doesn’t help either. Thankfully, she does survive.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Twice in the movie, Nibble tries to get Tom to consider what he's doing and change for the good. This seems like it's setting up for Tom to realise working for the King of the Cats isn't so great and make a Heel–Face Turn... No such thing occurs.
  • The Woobie: It's not hard to feel sorry for Nelly. She doesn't go along with Jerry and co. when they're at the cliff due to her fear of heights, and later leaves off on her own of guilt after being made to give up where they are going to the cats.
