- Harsher in Hindsight:
- Homer accidentally getting Edna Krabappel killed echoes what happened to Maude Flanders, though, unlike Maude, we don't see how Homer exactly caused Edna's death. Two years after this episode aired, Edna's voice actress, Marcia Wallace, passed away and she was retired from the series as a result. Edna was later revealed to have died following her retirement from the series, but the events behind it were never disclosed, possibly because of this episode.
- Despite the Running Gag of characters in the show—including Homer himself—predicting an early death for Homer due to his unhealthy lifestyle, this episode shows him living happily into old age after kicking alcohol. The Sequel Episode "Days of Future Future" reframes this by showing that, technically, he didn't: the original Homer died from a heart attack when everybody was the same age as in the show proper, and the Homer of the future is the latest in a long line of Expendable Clone replacements that preserve all of his memories, similar to the Clone Army of Ralph Wiggums we see in this episode.
