Vindicated by History: It's now considered one of Billy Wilder's best, and many consider it the greatest movie about Sherlock Holmes. Mark Gatiss, creator of Sherlock, considers it the best and cites it as an influence of his take on the character.
The Woobie: Holmes. Early on, Watson overshoots his bounds with a question about Holmes's past, and Holmes, previously in decent humor, goes cool and goes to his room. Later on, the man himself tells Madame Valladon that his fiancee died just a day before the wedding. He seems to have gotten over it, but the fact remains that he was that close to getting married. The end simply tops it off, and Watson isn't about to deny him his cocaine.
