- Award Snub: Edward Norton won six awards for Supporting Actor and Courtney Love won five for Supporting Actress but neither was even nominated for an Academy Award. The latter's chances were more than likely hurt by the studio pushing for her as a lead, not to mention Love being a controversial figure.
- All of Edward Norton's citations for this film were shared with Primal Fear (and some with Everyone Says I Love You), for which he was nominated for an Academy Award instead, with the Academy's rules only allowing an actor one nomination per category.
- Harsher in Hindsight: In the home movie, Althea claims that she will never be old and ugly but Larry will.
- Tear Jerker:
- Larry finding Althea in the bathtub. Woody Harrelson absolutely nails the despair and heartache of the scene.
- Larry recounting the final victory against Falwell to a home movie of Althea as well.
- Larry's despair over being paralyzed and not being able to reproduce drives him to abandon religion.
