YMMV / The Man Who Knew Too Little

Go To

  • Broken Base: General consensus amongst the people who dislike this film is that the running gag of Wallace being Mistaken for Badass and him doing crazy things as The Fool who thinks it's all an act is lackluster and can't carry the film by itself. Those who like the film do so because said running gag involves Bill Murray acting completely bonkers.
  • Critical Dissonance: This film was completely savaged by critics, with a standing in Rotten Tomatoes of 39% "Rotten". Audiences were a whole lot more forgiving and found it hilarious, and audience score averages at 69% "Fresh".
  • Spiritual Adaptation: Although it primarily takes inspiration from The Man Who Knew Too Much, the movie could qualify as an American remake of the French film The Umbrella Coup, just replace the mafia with spies.
  • Unintentional Period Piece:
    • The plot of the film is yet another example of spies trying to do something heinous to reignite the Cold War because "Why We Are Bummed Communism Fell", placing it in the "honeymoon period" of US/New Russian relationships of The '90s.
    • Wallace's job is a clerk in Blockbuster Video (Des Moines, Iowa), placing this film well before streaming services demolished Blockbuster.
    • The plot of this film is yet another comedy of errors that probably would get routed if everybody in the cast had access to a cell phone.
