• Award Snub: Despite its universal praise, it had the bad luck to be released the same year as the similarly-acclaimed Roma. Shoplifters still got nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, but with Roma considered a strong contender to be the first non-English-language Best Picture winner, it had the Foreign Language award basically clinched even before nominations were announced.^note Ironically, the next year Parasite, which followed Shoplifters as the Palme D'Or winner and was often labeled the Spiritual Antithesis of Shoplifters, one-upped Roma and actually won Best Picture
• Friendly Fandoms: Despite being considered as its Spiritual Antithesis, it's very common to see people liking this movie also liking Parasite (2019) for sharing the similar premise and also winning Palme d'Or a year later.
• Retroactive Recognition: Shota's actor, Jyo Kairi, will go on to play Ray in the live-action adaptation of The Promised Neverland.
