YMMV / Rampage (2009)

Go To

  • Ass Pull: Bill gaining actual redeeming qualities in the third installment has been met with this response, since he has been shown to be an utterly bloodthirsty and sadistic maniac up until this point.
  • Designated Hero: Bill Williamson is treated as a hero (in-universe, by some people as well as the creator of the films) fighting against an unjust system, with all his actions contributing for that cause. This is ignoring the fact that he bombed a police station, murdered several people with fully-automatic weapons in the street, and engages in cruel acts like forcing two people to beat each other up, going after specific people whose only sins towards him were as insignificant as getting a coffee order wrong, and going as far as never talking to his parents after his killing spree, leaving them in agonizing grief, culminating in them killing themselves over his actions, among other things. His "cause" is either a bullshit excuse for his killings or part of Bill's insane mentality, as he is a total hypocrite whose actions greatly contrast with his stated views (ex: one of the things he champions for is stronger gun laws, but he is a major violator of gun laws himself). While he does care for his girlfriend and child, he's nonetheless a dangerous, deluded psychopath whose actions are mainly out of selfish malice and should in no way be considered "heroic".
  • He Really Can Direct: General consensus seems to be that this may be Uwe Boll's first good movie (as in, genuinely good, not So Bad, It's Good), earning a 6.4 on IMDb.
  • Misaimed Fandom: Williamson's ranting speech in Rampage 2 has oddly gained some popularity on the French-speaking Internet, and has become famous under a clip named Quand un psychopathe nous dit la vérité (When a psychopath tells us the truth)... forgetting that Williamson is a petty murderous hypocrite.
  • Nightmare Fuel: It's a movie about a sadistic spree killer massacring the people he comes across, so it's practically a given that this movie would have disturbing and nightmarish scenes. The crowner certainly goes to the ending of the third film, where Bill's death leads to a bunch of violent riots with no end in sight.
  • Spiritual Adaptation: A great movie adaptation of either the first Postal or Hatred (though the latter game actually came out after the first movie). This is very ironic, as Uwe Boll directed the (very badly received) actual adaptation of Postal.
  • Strawman Has a Point: In President Down, the FBI agent Vincent Jones is intended to be in the wrong for opposing Bill's agenda, in spite of him making the very valid point that Bill's goals are completely undermined by the fact that he carried them out by killing many innocent people.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: Considering that the main protagonist happens to be a mass murdering sociopath who manages to get away with his killing spree, and the fact that the Police Are Useless, it's really hard to care about any of the characters that the protagonist has killed.
