- Alternative Character Interpretation: It's pretty much a whole book of it.
- Are Hunter and his crew Anti-Heroes or Villain Protagonists?
- Is Almont a Big Good or a Corrupt Politician?
- Is Hacklett prior to crossing the Moral Event Horizon Too Dumb to Live or merely Born in the Wrong Century?
- Are the character's final fates in the epilogue merely examples of Dropped a Bridge on Him or long overdue Karmic Deaths?
- Base-Breaking Character: Whether Sarah is a whiny, stilted character irrelevant to the plot or a nice Audience Surrogate who has some unfulfilled potential in her interactions with Hunter can be argued.
- Ensemble Dark Horse: Of the Pirates, there’s Lazue the sharp eyed male impersonating Action Girl and Don Diego, being one of the more sympathetic pirates with his Dark and Troubled Past and Demolitions Expert accomplishments.
- Fanon Discontinuity: Some fans would rather ignore the final chapter, with its overuse of the Deadly Distant Finale trope.
- Moral Event Horizon:
- Hacklett and Scott collectively cross this when Hacklett allows Scott to rape Emily.
- Cazalla (an Ax-Crazy man who has tortured and killed countless people both in cooperation with the Inquisition and as part of his conflict with England) has crossed it a long long time ago, and probably does not even care anymore (if he ever cared at all).
