YMMV / Out of Africa

Go To

  • Award Snub: The film received eleven Academy Award nominations and won seven, but Robert Redford wasn't nominated for Best Actor.
  • Awesome Music: The Oscar-winning score by John Barry. Ironically, when he wrote a very similar-sounding score for High Road To China two years prior, it was criticised as "uninspired".
  • Ending Fatigue: The last half-hour has more goodbyes than most TV series finales.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • When Karen returns from Denmark after recovering from syphilis and the Kikuyu all come and welcome her back.
    • Denys trusting that Karen knows what she's doing when she goes to the military encampment herself instead of sending someone, and then giving her his compass so she can navigate better.
  • Hype Backlash: When it was released, it was celebrated as a great, adventurous romance and a fantastic story, with raving reviews and great box office results to match, showered with awards from all sides. Nowadays, it's seen as one of the blandest Best Picture Academy Award winners ever, to the point where it routinely makes it to the "top 5 most undeserved Best Pictures" lists.
  • Signature Scene: Karen and Denys flying over Africa. In fact, you might not even know what movie it is from, yet you are likely to know the scene itself.
  • Tear Jerker: Karen's departure from Africa.
  • Values Dissonance: Hard to imagine now; while not at all dismissive of the natives, the film (following the memoir) is still an elegy to African colonialism through the travails of an unfortunate European baroness and other dignified colonists.
