YMMV / Once Upon a Time S5 E9 "The Bear King"

Go To

  • Anvilicious: The girl power message was pushed rather heavy handedly - with many people in Fergus's army making sexist comments. It raises eyebrows given that Merida would have been a prominent Action Girl for at least ten years (and was known as one in her movie). Given the immense respect shown to the Queen in the movie, DunBroch doesn't seem sexist enough for such comments to be believable. Especially since Mulan has apparently been in the army for a while. Not to mention that in real life, the Celtic people were known for having great respect for women warriors and were often quite willing to be led by them (Boudicca comes to mind).
  • Fanfic Fuel: What Mulan did after getting separated from the Merry Men - and why she wasn't pulled into Storybrooke with the second Dark Curse. Likewise what happened to all the other wolves, and how and why Ruby came to be captured by the witch (she states she went to her for help, but nothing more; as for how, the only answer seems to be magic and surprise). And until it becomes canon, what Ruby and Mulan do on their adventures after helping Merida.
  • I Knew It!: A few fans had guessed that the witch was really pulling a Secret Test of Character. Sure enough they were proven right by the end.
  • Narm: Ruby's line "how did you know I was a girl in wolf's clothing", poor Meghan Ory is doing her best to not make it sound forced.
  • She Really Can Act: While people didn't think much of Merida as a character, her critics noted that this was a very good demonstration of Amy Manson's acting talents.
  • Trapped by Mountain Lions: The Reveal that Hook is a second Dark One was put on hold for this episode, which contributes nothing to that arc. According to Amy Manson, Merida had been planned as a series regular, but she opted not to move to Canada - so presumably this was scripted when those plans were still in mind.
  • Unexpected Character: Both Mulan and Ruby.
  • The Un-Twist: Arthur being revealed as Fergus's killer was rather obvious.
