YMMV / Nothing to Lose

  • Critical Dissonance: Reviewers gave the movie pretty cold receptions for all the faults of the needlessly contrived plot, while audiences were much more forgiving to the dynamic duo made by Robbins and Lawrence.
  • Cult Classic: While the film was a moderate box-office success, it managed to gain a truly strong following due to cable re-runs in early '00s.
  • Retroactive Recognition: From a modern perspective, the film has an All-Star Cast.
  • Signature Scene: The spider scene, in which Tim Robbins performs a crazy dance trying to shake off a spider from his head, while his shoes are on fire. And "Scatman" by Scatman John is blasting in the background.
  • So Okay, It's Average: Despite the lukewarm reviews, most of them pointed directly into this trope: a lot of potential, some of it utilized, some of it wasted; a contrived plot that could work better without half of the elements and few absolutely hilarious scenes in-between it all.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: The clothes, the music in the background (both soundtrack and radio), the extensive talks about electronics, security systems, reliance on payphones and "new" Windows NT put the film firmly in the mid-'90s.
