- Genius Bonus: Li's full name is Hu-Li, which is derived from Huli jing, a mythical fox-like creature of Chinese folklore.
- Harsher in Hindsight: Shifu's perverted behavior towards Yeying early in the story can be a little awkward to read in light of Dustin Hoffman's sexual harassment allegations note .
- Hilarious in Hindsight: Two of the characters in the story are named Song (later renamed "Yeying") and Dong Li (formally known as "Hu-Li"). This was before Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness introduced two other characters with the exact same names.
- Strangled by the Red String: Although there were some hints in early parts of the story, Shifu's infatuation with Yeying can feel a little abrupt. That being said, their actual romance once the two get married is executed pretty well.
- Tearjerker:
- This story is very tough going with really low points like Shifu sinking emotionally at the loss of everyone he loved to the point where he would have nearly committed suicide if he hadn't heard the infant Tai Lung at the last moment.
- The aftermath of Tai Lung's rampage is made all the more heartbreaking seeing the Fire-Forged Friends of the Leopard and Vachir the Rhino become merely a prisoner of a hateful warder who tortured him for years.
