YMMV / Lucky Number Thirteen

Go To

  • Anvilicious: The fic isn't too subtle around what BDSM is and isn't and the emphasis on Safe, Sane, and Consensual. However, considering how important things like trust and consent are in these situations, how some people might take advantage of vulnerable or inexperienced people to harm them, and the frequent criticisms of how Fifty Shades gets this wrong, these are inarguably anvils that need dropping.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: For anti-fans, the fact that the original books don't end the same way as this fic. In the fic, Ana realises how manipulative and destructive Christian is and decides to breaks things off with him, with Kate and Sharon as back-up. In the books Ana continues her relationship with Christian, is left distraught when he beats her with a belt and leaves...and then gets back with him when he promises not to hit her again, although he continues to be very controlling and threatening towards her – she actually states in the books themselves that she finds him intimidating and overly-controlling. And she ends up marrying this guy after only a few months, which several readers found to be an Esoteric Happy Ending.
  • Iron Woobie: Sharon. Ana is surprised by how cheerful and well-adjusted she appears despite having a pretty horrific experience with Christian a little over a year ago.
  • Les Yay: After Ana warms up to Sharon, their interaction in the rest of the fic is very sweet. Sharon immediately agreeing to go with Ana when she plans to end things with Christian can be read as a Declaration of Protection and a girlfriend refusing to let her significant other get hurt if she can help it.
  • Nightmare Fuel: What happened to Sharon when she was Christian's sub. The build-up gradually goes from relatively innocuous to increasingly uncomfortable and unsettling, until it finally gets to the Resolved Noodle Incident where Sharon was injured. That whole scene is pretty chilling and disturbing, despite only being about two paragraphs long.
  • The Woobie: This fic really makes you feel sorry for Ana, as it highlights just how naive and ignorant she is, which Christian fully exploits. Her realising in hindsight just how manipulative Christian is makes her feel terrible by how easily he sucked her in and sickened by the things he did (and was planning to do).
