YMMV / Les Tontons flingueurs

Go To

  • Adaptation Displacement: The film was adapted from the novel Grisbi or not Grisbi by Albert Simonin. It's safe to say the movie is much more well-known than the original work.
  • Memetic Mutation: It's an understatement to say that Michel Audiard's dialogues for this film (and some others) have left an impact on French popular culture. It's one of the (if not the) most quotable French films ever made at a national level.
    • "Les cons ça ose tout, c'est même à ça qu'on les reconnait." ("Morons dare it all, that's even how you recognize them.") is known by many in France, even those who never saw the movie, and quoted quite frequently.
    • A specific extract of the movie's audiotrack (consisting in cartoonishly supressed gunshots accompanied by the movie's Leitmotif) is often used a Standard Snippet in French humorous or political YouTube videos to lampshade Take That!, such as with Mozinor.
  • Special Effect Failure: In two instances during the shootout, Jean fires his gun, and only the cartoonish silencer sound comes out of it, no shot or smoke are visible.
