YMMV / Legion of Super-Heroes (2023)

Go To

  • Angst? What Angst?: Triplicate Girl has one of her bodies murdered when she stumbles upon the Dark Circle. Later in the movie, her remaining two bodies are angry about what happened yet they overall treat this as more of an annoyance than than the fact one of their selves died. It's especially glaring compared to how the 2006 animated series handled the same plotline, with Duo Damsel appropriately mourning the loss of her white self when she gets erased at the beginning of the second season.
  • Complete Monster: The original Brainiac is the secret founder of the Dark Circle. A nightmarish villain responsible for countless atrocities, Brainiac attempts to have his minions murder Legion members to manipulate Kara and his clone Brainiac 5 into activating a special device that affects space and time. Having had numerous other clones created to do damage ranging from serial killing to mass destruction, Brainiac has survived by grafting them to his body still alive, conscious and with one still screaming. Seizing control of the device, Brainiac plans to erase every hero from existence along with anyone that could ever possibly threaten his reign over existence, plotting to destroy entire worlds to secure his final goal.
  • He's Just Hiding: It can be nice to hope that Alura activated more escape pods after sending Kara away and was able to save herself and some of the other citizens of Argo City.
  • So Okay, It's Average: The overall consensus from many Legion fans is that the movie is fine, but aside from the interactions between Supergirl and Brainiac 5 it doesn't really provide anything new or interesting to the Legion's mythos. The reception to Mon-El being a villain has been negative, though. Some argue the film could've been much worse, due to it clearly taking heavy influence from Brian Bendis's much loathed Legion run.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!:
    • Not many people were happy with Mon-El being a villain. Mixed with this however is a case of It's the Same, Now It Sucks!, as people accuse it of being nothing more than a random twist forced into the film just like with the previous film Green Lantern: Beware My Power.
    • Several fans are disappointed that, yet again, Argo City's Backstory of surviving Krypton's destruction with a massive force field wasn't adapted to screen like in the comics or Supergirl. Here, there is a plan to save Argo, but it fails, and the city is destroyed along with Krypton while Kara is launched away in a rocket at the last second.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Triplicate Girl losing one of her selves is simply treated for quick shock value, with many viewers finding it disturbing at how the remaining two are more annoyed than anything over the triplicate being brutally killed by the Dark Circle. The fact that this is also a case of Black Dudes Die First makes it worse for some, as she's the only Legionnaire to be killed on-screen.
  • Tough Act to Follow: It's considered a very watered down adaption compared to the Cult Classic Legion of Super Heroes (2006).
