• Awesome Art: Neal Adams and Curt Swan are incredible artists.
• Growing the Beard: After the campy and whimsical stories of the Silver Age, this series brought Superman back to his roots as a powerful, yet still grounded and responsible hero.
• Harsher in Hindsight: The Sandman Superman states that there can be only one Superman. Fourteen years later DC decides he is right and Supergirl, Krypto the Superdog, General Zod, the remainder Phantom Zone inmates... are killed and erased from History.
• Signature Scene:
  • Superman #233's cover in which he breaks the Kryptonite chains binding him is one of the most iconic covers in the series (not to mention superhero comics in general), and dozens of covers and panels of Superman and Supergirl comics have paid tribute to it.
  • Superman munching a chunk of Kryptonite and saying “It's bland. Needs salt.” When the 1992 Post-Crisis special issue revisited this plotline, they repeated this scene.
