YMMV / Joe Pera Talks With You

Go To

  • Diagnosed by the Audience: Viewers interpret both Joe and Sarah as neurodivergent.
    • It's vaguely implied that Joe has Asperger's - very high functioning Asperger's. He's deeply interested in obscure trivia and hobbies, frequently makes long lists of topics, speaks in a monotone, and is a bit socially awkward. That said, he's reasonably aware of general social cues and very polite and gentle to other people. He goes on long and rambling philosophical tangents pondering things about everyday life, many of which do end up being kind of thought-provoking and insightful. He's also generally presented to be good at his job as the school's choir teacher.
    • Sarah's various paranoias and increasingly frequent need to hide in her bunker or flee town to camp out in the woods might point to her having some undiagnosed anxiety disorder. She narrates in "Joe Pera Takes You on a Hike" that she's conscious of how unwarranted some of her fears are, and that she dislikes this about herself.
  • Friendly Fandoms: With How To With John Wilson. Both series following awkward but friendly men as they observe the world. They also share a writer.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: In one episode, Mike unfavorably compares Joe to Jeffrey Dahmer. A while later, a Netflix docuseries about Jeffrey Dahmer dropped, with people comparing Evan Peters’ Dahmer voice to that of Joe Pera. The reason it’s under this trope is because Joe Pera found the comparisons upsetting.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Jo Firestone plays Sarah Conner here - she’s a paranoid doomsday prepper who believes the worst about her fellow man - so it’s kind of hilarious to hear her get cast shortly after as Euthanasia Fantasy, who is trusting to a fault.
    • Mike Melsky starts eating an entire roast chicken per day, which hurts his relationship with his wife. In 2022, a Philadelphia man went viral for basically doing the same thing for over a month and was lauded as a hero for it.
  • Sweet Dreams Fuel: The entire show has a very sweet, gentle tone, with a lovable cast and plenty of Scenery Porn. Many viewers have reported watching it to go to sleep.
  • Tearjerker: The ending of "Joe Pera Has a Surprise For You" where it's revealed that Joe's nana has passed away. Likewise for "Joe Pera Helps You Write" which deals with her funeral. It becomes sadder when you remember that Joe's real-life grandma died before Season 1 aired.
