YMMV / Hero of the Kingdom

Go To

  • Cargo Ship: Princess Amelia, in the third game, is in love with a ruby. Of course, it's a Hypno Trinket courtesy of the Big Bad, but it still fits.
  • Contrived Coincidence: In the second game, it's hard to come up with a coincidence more contrived than the pirate leader who kidnaps the hero's little sister turning out to be their older brother. He left home at age twelve, when the hero was only three and the sister hadn't even been born yet, and he never got mentioned up to this point in the game because they forgot he existed. And so he accidentally kidnapped his own little sister. Surely they'll laugh about this at family reunions for years to come.
  • Designated Love Interest: The princess of the second game seems to exist mostly to be one of these for the hero; see below.
  • Heartwarming Moments: In the second game, helping your little sister collect ten seashells to make a necklace earns you the Careful achievement. But talking to her again after the necklace is finished reveals that she actually made it as a gift for you - just because she loves you.
  • Player Punch: In the third game, when Uncle Brent is Killed Off for Real, it can hit this way - especially for returning players from the previous installments. Up to this point in the series, loved ones of the heroes who disappear for one reason or another have always returned safely by the end of the game... but not this time. It's especially sad because Uncle Brent is the hero's only known relative, and the game has made it clear that they really love each other. And it's made even worse if you've played all five games and realize that you've met Uncle Brent in every single installment.
    • It gets potentially even worse. In the third game, the hero is an orphan raised by his Uncle Brent. Playing the prequel games makes you realize that Uncle Brent used to be the little boy Brent who adopts the hero of Lost Tales 1 as his older brother. So... is the hero of the third game the son of the hero of Lost Tales 1?
  • Strangled by the Red String: The romance in the second game falls into this. It's given very little focus, and although the hero does indicate that he thinks his female companion is beautiful and he likes her, it still comes as a surprise when she says that she likes him and he responds with the notion that "I have to tell her that I love her."
  • The Woobie: Lost Tales gives us two. One is Brent, the orphan boy whom the protagonist more or less adopts. The other is Sagard, formerly the mayor of the village, who was Happily Married until the current mayor and his friends framed him for the murder of his pregnant wife. He became a Heartbroken Badass and Crusading Widow, but the protagonist observes that the pain in his eyes is tremendous.
