- Dueling Works: With anything Alejandro Jodorowsky made at the time, El Topo in particular.
- Faux Symbolism: Pretty much what the whole movie is built around. In fact, just to run down the specifics (to the best anybody has been able to figure out):
- Jessy, as mentioned, is the symbolic Christ.
- Greaser's Palace is supposedly the symbolism of the Catholic Church, Seaweedhead Greaser himself supposedly God, and his daughter Cholera, supposedly the devil.
- Alternatively, the Father is God and the agent Morris is the Devil.
- There's also a "ghost" the Jessy encounters throughout the movie (really, just a man walking around in a sheet with holes cut for eyes, and a black derby), who symbolizes the Holy Spirit.
- As mentioned above, the whole movie itself is supposed to be an allegory of Christ in the New Testament; we see Jessy perform incredible feats, such as bringing dead people back to life, walking on water, and making a lame man... crawl again... turning him into something of a celebrity, as more and more spectators follow him on his journey to Jerusalem (to become an actor/singer). He's even crucified in the end... again, apparently.
- Retroactive Recognition:
- Try not to think of Dr. Freedman when watching this film.
- Hervé Villechaize would go on to bigger and better things.
