YMMV / Girl in a Blue Wig in Musicals

Go To

  • Ambiguous Situation: Some viewers were initially left unclear as to whether Sunflower really cut up Belle’s gloves, partially due to her swearing up and down that she didn’t (she suggests that Blue stole her sweater, i.e. her one defining feature, in order to frame her), and partially due to ALL the characters looking identical.
  • Broken Base: On Blue possibly getting a redemption arc. Both the creator and the viewers have gone back and forth on the idea of her being redeemed. Possible nuggets include her deliberately giving her mother the wrong time for rehearsal during Season 2 so as to prevent her mother barging in and disrupting rehearsal (it doesn’t work), meaning she must have figured out on some level that her mother is a problem. Then again, this was before she brought up Jake’s family issues …
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: The stage manager, despite having relatively few scenes and not even a name, has become a fan favourite due to her not hesitating to put Blue in her place or call out others’ bad behaviour too - even the director.
  • Fashion-Victim Villain: Blue's signature bright blue wig, which she states she wears because it "gives her character", is a constant source of mockery.
  • Fridge Brilliance: A rare meta example - Elliot auditioned as a joke and eventually came to take it more seriously and dedicate more of his time and energy towards it with the help of others. Out of universe, this is almost exactly what ended up happening with Emily and the series as a whole, with it starting off with short comedy skits before taking the suggestions of viewers and putting serious time and effort into producing a fully realised webseries, all on her own. In other words, it all started as a joke that was eventually taken seriously!
    • Blue claims she wears her blue wig because it "gives her character." Out of universe, she's actually right - her blue wig is easily the most iconic symbol of both her character and the webseries as a whole, to the point where fewer people will recognise Emily without it.
  • Growing the Beard: The series went from one-off skits just featuring Blue and the director to a fully realised cast of characters with a cohesive storyline. The Beard was grown even further with Season 2.
  • Iconic Character, Forgotten Title: Though the character of Blue will be relatively familiar to people scrolling on the right side of TikTok, fewer know that there has been a whole series built around her antics, and not as many will recognise Emily without the blue wig.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Blue is definitely insufferable, and deserves 99% of what comes her way. Yet plenty of her actions point to her being deeply insecure about her abilities as a musical theatre artist, hence why she feels the need to make a bigger deal of whatever part she has than is warranted and belittle other actors. Some of her previous experiences can’t have done much for her either:
    • Her parents divorced 5 years prior after her father possibly cheated on her mother.
    • Elliot’s friend had previously asked her out as a joke. This especially struck a nerve with viewers who had been victims of a similar prank.
    • Her constantly interfering mother hurts her chances even more to the point where Anna expresses feeling bad for her … though Jake doesn’t.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Sunflower cutting up Belle’s gloves during Beauty and the Beast and attempting to frame Blue for it, a move so low that even Blue looks down on her.
    • Blue herself hits this when she blames Jake’s anger towards her on his issues with his family mistreating him (as opposed to, yunno, her being obnoxious). It was around this time that fans stopped expecting/hoping for her to be redeemed.
  • One True Threesome: Many people ship Anna, Jake, and Elliot in a polycule.
    • This was the case for almost the whole series until Ivy joined the group and caught Elliot's attention. Some choose to ship her with Elliot, while others consider adding her to the polycule.
  • Protagonist Title Fallacy: Though Blue is the character the series is named after and is easily the most recognisable, she is undisputedly NOT the protagonist.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: Blue sings an “original” song for her musical about how she’s innocent and talented and how everyone hates her for it … and it’s on ukulele.
    • In addition to this, Blue's 100% ORIGINAL MUSICAL that she is writing, directing, producing, and starring in is also apparently "jukebox" musical that includes "Take Me or Leave Me" from RENT.
  • Take That, Scrappy!!: Most of this series is built on Blue doing or saying something highly disrespectful, obnoxious, or catty, and getting called out for it by the other characters.
  • Tear Jerker: Jake's breakdown about his family certainly qualifies as this. After Blue attempts to suggest that he's just projecting his family's poor treatment of him onto her, he explodes. He goes off about how his family never comes to see him in shows because they don't care about him and don't like or accept him being in them; how his family would never open their door to him if he was banging on it, causing him to spend most of his time at Anna's house; and overall doesn't care one little bit about him and don't accept him for who he is. He yells that being in theatre is ALL he has, the only thing that he can be proud of, and he's not going to sink to Blue's level and let her ruin it for him. During his rant, you can see and hear actual tears coming from him that genuinely choke you up. Just ... remember when these were funny little skits about a girl with a blue wig?!
  • The Un Twist: Many fans were expecting/hoping for Blue to get a redemption arc from small nuggets seen near the beginning of Season 2, but it's been over a year since then and she's just as much a Hate Sink as before.
  • The Woobie: You feel sorry for a lot of the characters having to put up with Blue for most of the time, but it’s Jake that really takes the Woobie cake - it’s alluded to several times that his family never show up to any of the shows he’s in, but in Season 2 it’s revealed (in a heartfelt rant to Blue of all people) that his family doesn’t care one bit about him, doesn’t like him being in theatre, and ignore him to the point where they won't care to let him in the house even if he’s banging on the door. Being in theatre is the ONLY thing he has going for him, that he’s passionate about and can be proud of. Yet, even that is constantly marred and even put in jeopardy by Blue’s actions, provoking him into acting poorly. It’s hard not to feel sorry for him.
