YMMV / Gamera vs. Gyaos

Go To

  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Gyaos, who started off as another one of the many monster enemies, is one for Kaiju fans for putting up a good fight against Gamera, and for its unique abilities, such as being able to grow back its missing limbs. He’s often considered Gamera’s archenemy in the same way King Ghidorah is to Godzilla, later reappearing in Heisei trilogy and Gamera the Brave.
  • Even Better Sequel: Though its two predecessors are liked, it’s this film that ultimately set stage for Gamera’s popularity for years to come. Taking the separate formulas of the previous films and finding the right balance of being a serious film with a pure Nightmare Fuel of a villain while still being appealing to kids. Gyaos would go on to become Gamera’s most iconic foe and appear in several more films. This film is still looked at as possibly the best of the Showa Gamera films.
  • Franchise Original Sin: Though Giant Monster Gamera did have a child protagonist, this film was the first to feature the concept of Gamera as the Friend to All Children as he’s shown going out of his way to protect and save a young boy from Gyaos during their fights, something that would later be exploited throughout the rest of the Showa era films. It was better received here as Gamera was still transitioning from a neutral force from the last movie to a superhero from here on out, and Eiichi (the child protagonist himself) was shown to be helpful and confident for his age and it didn’t focus on all of its attention on the kid, something the latter Showa films were mocked relentlessly for.
  • Funny Moments: When Gyaos's toes grow back, then it accidentally knocks a stalactite on then while they're still sensitive.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: In this film, Gyaos nearly slices off Gamera right arm. Thirty two years later, Gamera would lose his right arm, albeit self inflicted, during his fight with Irys.
