  • He's Just Hiding: Most of the rebels (even ones apparently captured alive or not seen being identified onscreen) are marked as deceased on The Big Board at the end, but it is vaguely possible that some of their deaths may have been faked due to the machinations of Mulligan, given how a couple were cases of Never Found the Body and because the group had at least one contact in the city morgue (although he was among those identified and marked as deceased).
  • Nightmare Fuel: That tracking implant everyone has? Turns out it's some kind of alien grub that lives under your skin. Oh, and the removal procedure is sometimes fatal.
  • Signature Scene: The complicated Delegation Relay chain by which Rafe alerts his resistance fighters that it's time (a phone call to place ad with a secret message, a DJ seeing that ad playing a specific song, a man hearing that song walking his dog past a certain garage, the mechanic seeing that dog and "fixing up" a special type of car with certain accessories, etc.) is one of the most talked about parts of the movie.
  • Special Effect Failure: The CGI textures on the spaceships flying over Lake Michigan look a little short on processing time, but credit for the water effects as they fly over it, though.
  • Spiritual Adaptation:
    • It's been compared, for fairly obvious reasons, to a movie version of Half-Life 2.
    • Also, to a movie version of XCOM 2.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The best parts of the movie are the resistance and Mulligan, and the movie might have moved a little faster focusing more on them and less on Gabe.
