YMMV / Bubsy 3D

Go To

  • Aluminium Christmas Trees: Given 3D's infamous reputation and near-unplayability, many thought PSExtreme Magazine was a made-up magazine and/or that the lavish praise and "Gold X Award" on the game's cover is fake. It isn't.
  • Bile Fascination: Of course some people are going to want to analyse just how poorly this game aged.
  • Camera Screw: The camera has an annoying habit of going overhead whenever Bubsy jumps, making it difficult to tell who is in front of him.
  • Condemned by History: There are reasons why this game is unquestionably and undoubtedly one of the most brutal examples of being smacked with this trope in video game history.
  • Common Knowledge:
    • The belief that the PSExtreme's "Gold X Award" that Bubsy 3D received and proudly advertised on its cover was something Accolade made up to make the game look more impressive. PSExtreme was a real, if obscure, magazine who gave "X Awards" (ranging from Platinum to Tin) to their most highly reviewed games. They essentially gave the game a B grade.
    • The belief that Bubsy 3D was rushed out to try and capitalize on the success of Super Mario 64 and Crash Bandicoot. While Super Mario 64 and Crash Bandicoot did come out shortly before Bubsy 3D, it had been in development long before Super Mario 64 and Crash Bandicoot had been publicly revealed. Series creator Michael Berlyn even believed that Bubsy 3D would be the first true 3D platformer until seeing Super Mario 64 at E3 1996, at which point he knew the game would flop as it was and wanted to restart development, only to then be told by Accolade higher ups that the company couldn't afford it and that the game would need to ship to recoup development and advertising costs.
    • For that matter, even the belief that Bubsy 3D was an immediate critical disaster. The game, upon release, actually garnered So Okay, It's Average reviews from most of the gaming press. Including a mediocre-but-not-terrible 5.5/10 score from Gamespot. Of course, 3D platformers were still an unproven genre at the time, so reviewers naturally treated the game with kid gloves. It wasn't until the genre was well established and hindsight kicked in that the game developed its current reputation as one of the worst games ever made.
  • Newer Than They Think: It's easy to assume that, with its incredibly awkward tank controls and horrible camera, that Bubsy 3D predates Super Mario 64's revolutionizing of the 3D platformer genre. But in fact, it was released months afterwards. Though to be somewhat fair to the game, the two were in development at the same time, and they weren't aware of Nintendo's offerings until it was officially announced and it was too late to go back to the drawing board, so for most of development, they thought they really were doing something new.
  • Obvious Beta: Bubsy 3D was given such a rushed development cycle, that it only got a finished alpha done that was shoved out the door in order to play catch up to Super Mario 64. The result was a clunky-to-play, sloppy-looking, and all-around embarrassing rush job that put the franchise to the grave until 2017 with Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back, and even then it was only that, and Bubsy: Paws on Fire!, which came out before the series was put on hiatus again.
  • Only the Creator Does It Right: The complete opposite happened to this game. Michael Berlyn, who created the series, wasn't involved with the creation of Bubsy II or Fractured Furry Tales, which are seen as inferior to the first game. However, he then came back to head the production of this installment, which is seen as the worst entry of the series.
  • Presumed Flop: Bubsy 3D accrued a very negative perception over the years, which made it popular to claim the game was a critical failure right out of the game. In reality, Bubsy 3D's contemporary reviews were mixed (notice how most of the really negative reviews were published long after the game came and went) and it got genuinely positive evaluations impressions from some outlets, including respected enthusiasts magazines like Gamefan. This trope caused a popular but false claim that the glowing review and "Gold X Award" from PSExtreme listed on the cover were invented, because clearly, nobody would give Bubsy 3D that high of a rating, right?
  • Sequelitis: The series was already declining in quality with each installment before this point, with games like Bubsy 2 and Fractured Furry Tales being considered inferior to the first game. And then came this game and it topped both of them in awfulness, with horrendous controls, horrible voice acting and some of the worst graphics in video game history.
