  • Complete Monster: Pinkie Brown in the 2010 Film of the Book is a cruel, 17-year-old sociopath who is seen committing murder by a young woman. With her unaware of his identity, and so she will not testify against him, Pinkie seduces and marries her, killing again to cover his tracks. When he realizes a journalist is on his trail, Pinkie decides his wife is a liability and tries to force her into a Suicide Pact where she will die and he skips out on his end. When said journalist and a member of Pinkie's gang attempt to save her, Pinkie simply tries to murder all of them.
  • Once Original, Now Common: The 1948 movie was unique for its time due to its gritty realism, moral ambiguity, controversial subject matter, social commentary, and innovative filmmaking techniques. It portrayed the dark and realistic world of crime, challenged traditional notions of good and evil, touched upon sensitive topics, reflected post-war Britain's social realities, and employed innovative cinematography and editing techniques. Pretty much everything that made it unique became commonplace or outdone.
  • Retroactive Recognition: An uncredited Pierrot Artiste is played by Pamela Cundell, who would later be best known for playing Mrs. Fox in Dad's Army.
  • The Woobie: Rose can be seen as this, as she truly believes Pinkie loves her, and her parents do not seem to care much for her, as they willingly accept a large sum of money from Pinkie to marry her.
